But it says I have to attach an Authenticator and SMS Protect to my account.

Doesn’t matter anymore. Someone let me in on their M+ group for a quick join/leave.
This is limit website advertisers who sell services/currency for real money from using hacked accounts.
And anyway, it’s a good idea to protect your account using 2-factor authentication. All you need is an iOS or Android mobile phone (which I guess most people have).
