Can't understand the future of wow

Hi there,
I’ve returned to WoW after several years. I played for a long time back in the day, mainly during Wrath of the Lich King, Cataclysm, and Mists of Pandaria. I came back briefly during Legion, and the last expansion I touched was Battle for Azeroth. That’s when I quit the game because I no longer felt connected to it.

Now that I’m back, I find Retail completely unrecognizable. You can fly at level 10, abilities have been simplified, gear becomes obsolete constantly… I feel like the character is never truly “complete,” always waiting for the next patch, the next system overhaul. And honestly, I’m just not interested in playing that way anymore.

So I looked into WoW Classic, and I got excited about the idea of reliving the game with a different approach. But now that we’re in Mists of Pandaria Classic, I can’t help but wonder:

What’s the point of playing WoW Classic if it’s going to end up following the exact same path as Retail?

I mean, if after MoP we get Warlords of Draenor, then Legion, then Battle for Azeroth… what’s the point of investing time and perfecting a character if I already did all of that back then—and on my Retail account I already have all the mounts, toys, achievements, etc.?
What’s the future of this? Just staying a few steps behind Retail forever? Will it eventually stop and stay there?

Honestly, at first I thought there would be separate servers for each expansion, where you could stay in the one you liked without moving forward. But apparently that’s not the case. I really don’t understand what Blizzard is aiming for here.

Cheers.

just don’t then, there are still people playing classic wow vanilla and classic plus sod. or there were anyway until blizz killed that to funnel more wow token buyers elsewhere.

i’m just planning on quitting after mop anyway so maybe do that.
