Cataclysm, transmog, and mail - a request for clarification

It’s been announced that Cataclysm Classic will use the wardrobe transmog system that was originally introduced in Legion, automatically unlocking appearances from already-completed quests and equipped items instead of the clunky original transmog that required you to physically have each item you want the appearance of still in your bags. That’s great; the old system was a massive pain to work with and the wardrobe is a colossal upgrade that adds a huge pile of stuff to collect for transmog hunters.

However, another change Legion made at the same time was the simplification of armor types, doing away with certain classes changing from Leather to Mail or Mail to Plate at level 40; this is also when low-level mail Strength items were changed into plate. The fact this came at the same time made transmog unlocking by class very simple - all Warrior gear is plate, all Shaman gear is mail, etc. - but this presumably won’t be happening with Cataclysm Classic. This raises the question: since many, many quest reward appearances are permanently lost with the new world, which character do we need to have those quests completed on to unlock their appearance in Cataclysm’s wardrobe? A Warrior/Paladin, who the item is intended for, or a Hunter/Shaman, who can’t even equip the item at the level it’s acquired, but who has the “correct” armor type at 85? This even includes appearances like the Warrior’s Brutal/Fire-Hardened armor from their class quests, which under the second system could never be acquired by any character. There could also be an exception to allow plate classes to unlock low-level mail appearances, or even to follow the War Within model and simply allow all classes to unlock all appearances from already-completed quests.

It’d be really great if Blizzard could clarify the exact rules they’ll be going by prior to a week before Cata actually launches, as it makes a big difference for transmog hunters wanting to avoid permanently losing any appearances whether they’ll need to complete hundreds of quests all across old Azeroth on one, four, or even more different characters.
