I’ve posted in the transmogrification forum but apparently it’s a bit dead, I just wanted to know how does the catalyst work exactly.
So, I want this piece of armor that drops from the old dragonflight raid for transmog purposes, and the color I want is from the heroic version. Now, since I do suck quite a bit at raiding (or in any case heroic would be a bit too difficult for me I think), I just wanted to understand if I drop said item in say, the LFR version, and then I upgrade it, would it be possible for me to obtain the heroic look? If so, is it difficult to do? Shall I do atleast normal instead?
It most likely is an easy thing but I’m really confused about how the catalyst works.
You can’t upgrade old raid items (this is really the first season you can upgrade raid items in the modern sense of it), but for normal and heroic Vault of the Incarnates sets you can convert primal storm armor (385 ilvl gives normal, and upgrading to 395 gives heroic). You can get the tokens and currency from the Forbidden Reach rares, but I think rares in primal storms also drop the necessary stuff for ilvl 395 now.
Ok so basically if I wanted the heroic belt I would have to do primal storms and get the 359 ilvl one, convert it to 385 with the weekly token, and then upgrade it all the way up to 395, THEN convert it into raid gear… am I correct?
Yes, additionally, as Pihalecsmrti said there are 385 tokens from rares, and I believe since 10.0.7 rares can also drop storm sigils in case RNG doesn’t give you the tokens you need you can upgrade a 359 into 385 much faster than at the start of the expansion.
I think the Forbidden Reach rares might be faster, you can find groups hunting them for the cosmetics and besides the tokens you also get a lot of the currency.
I think the best course of action is to check if you can catalyst a drop from there which should, hopefully, give the LFR/normal version.
Unless it was changed from how it used to work you get to keep the upgrade option, but you also get the lower difficulty version of the appearance with this method.
I found it seemed to work the other way with open world Veteran gear. Upgrading it early as possible at level 1/8 for LFR appearances, then continuing to upgrade it with stones/crests to 8/8, which then unlocked normal appearances.
A champion item is needed to level up to as far as Heroic level I think.
On my hunter I did it the wrong way round and converted them at 8/8 (max) which meant I had to obtain a new veteran piece 1/1 and convert that to get the LFR look. This was more work.
I am currently working on replacing Veteran items with Champion, relevelling all those again. Hoping I can somehow replace my second adventurer trinket with a veteran one or higher to get wyrm crests otherwise my Champion stuff cannot be upgraded to very slowly access the transmog.
