Changing to fire

Hello guys. I’ve not touched a mage since cataclysm, decided to main it for DF.

I’m raidleading in the guild that I’m in, and I want to ensure that I got my rotation sitting in muscle memory so I can focus on callouts.

Is it worth getting into fire, considering I have to learn it from scratch?
My biggest concern is that I will be too tunnelvisioned when popping combust and I’ll forget all about callouts…

I’ve messed around on arcane and frost (after pre-patch) and I’m doing best on frost, for sure. Not sure if this is an itemlevel related condition. (current il 262)

But, from what I can gather, fire seems to be the better choice overall for pve content, and I wanna be the greatest possible asset for my team as possible.

Please help!

greatest asset is playing warlock

As someone who did that during BFA I can say it is possible to do it, but you may have trouble focusing too much on your combustion in the beginning. For that reason it is worth starting to practise now, as you really need that muscle memory set in for your combustion rotation. Depending on your learning speed it may take a while, but the spec I feel is versatile enough to worth sticking with it until you get enough routine with it.

I also recommend not using push to talk if you plan to do callouts, but I think that is obvious.

Fire tends to be a better option for PvE content more often than not, but it does not hurt to know your other specs better as well. Frost is easier to get into and it does not punish you as hard for mistakes as Fire does.

Cannot really speak for Arcane as I never tried it, but from what I have heard they have great burst phases as well, but they are more vulnerable for raid mechanics than Fire, who is pretty mobile, especially once you reach execute phase.

thank god we onlyu talking about pve, because pvp mage and versatile in the same sentence hurts my eyes heart and lungs

Depends on how good you are, but fire is in general from a purely mechanical p.o.v. one of the hardest ranged dps specs in the game. Arcane on the other hand has a deep rotation, but it’s mechanically way easier. Frost mage is very intuitive rotation-wise for me. It requires a little higher apm though than the other two, but it demands wayy less precision, so there is more room for error. Also, SKB duration may make you very rushed/stressed out between trash pulls, if your tank is slow.

I’d recommend you to try arcane/frost, but maybe fire works for you, so take my opinion with salt
