Character already exists with that name

I was trying to log onto one of my characters. The loading screen was stuck for 5 minutes, so I alt-f4 and tried to start wow again to log in.

Now I get the error “A character with that name already exists” - Of course it does, it’s mine, what does that have to do with me trying to log in?

The issue is only happening on one of my characters, Saldrayne. Other characters I can log into. Logging into another character, logging out then trying again also doesn’t work, “A character with that name already exists”.

Hey,
I cannot log in as it says a character already exists with that name.

This started after I tried to log in, got stuck in the loading screen with the loading bar full, so I alt + f4’ed out. Then when I tried to log in again, I got that error. I’ve tried restarting the client multiple times, but still get the error.

The character name is Supermook on Shadowsong EU

I have exactly the same problem. Tried other characters, and they can enter normaly in game. Just my paladin got stucked.

I had the same issue just now. I moved my character out of the warband and then I was able to log in without issue. Perhaps you can try that? I don’t think that’s the temporary fix but it worked for me.

Hey Helleus,

This is a completely normal error, which occurs when your character is still online (usually, this happens if you got disconnected from the game or ALT F4’d). Your character should automatically get disconnected after 10-15 minutes.

Seems waiting 15-30 minutes works.

I have the same problem but I haven’t been on the character for at least 24 hrs so how can it not be disconnected? I did not Alt f4 out of any other character, I simply logged out in a normal way and switched to my Hunter and tried to log into it and was given this erroneous message right off the bat after a long 10 minute freeze on the loading screen that I had to force quit out of.

Update: Seems to have fixed itself now. Happy days!
