Bug has been reported multiple times ever since it was implemented in pre-patch, just posting again for visibility:
So with Dragonflight pre-patch they upped the character slots we get per account from 50 to 60.
The character select screen has not been updated to account for this - meaning that once you have 50 characters on a realm, they remove the “create character” and undelete buttons, meaning the limit increase is nearly useless.
Currently, the only way around this is to create the character on another realm, and do a realm transfer (which proves that the limit is still intended to be there).
However, I don’t think it’s fair to expect us to pay over €100 to use the new updated character cap.
Also: Before the obvious comments - yes, I’m a severe altoholic. This is an issue that will affect nearly no one. Etc etc. But it is still an issue that affects some of us, and it should be a pretty trivial fix since they have updated the character screen limits multiple times before.
I’ve often wondered throughout the years if the cap is nothing to do with data handling or server numbers or whatever normally comes out of these posts but has everything to do with character name hording.
There is nothing stopping you creating 50 level 1 alts and hording names for later use.
If there wasn’t a cap or a high cap it would be quite easy to imagine a black market of character names being sold out of game.
While that might be true, but it really has nothing to do with the topic I posted about.
The account limit has been 50 since the start. The character limit used to be 10, then 12, then 16, and then they removed the realm limit entirely in mid-BFA (Patch 8.1.5) which allowed us to put all 50 characters on the same realm if we so choose.
The issue is that with Dragonflight pre-patch they increased the account limit by 10, but they didn’t update the character select screen code to make that possible on the same realm without paid transfers.
Who said it was a bug. What you describe is an exploit, a bit like using a transfer to get more than one DH/DK/whatever on a realm, when it was restricted.
No, it is definitely a bug. Before this, whenever there was a realm limit, trying to transfer an additional character there would tell you that the realm limit has been exceeded. As such, that shows that we are not hitting a realm limit.
In 8.1.5 they specifically REMOVED the realm limit. They didn’t just set it to 50, they just removed it.
Nah, this is a hallmark low priority bug and honestly it should be. While it kinda of sucks for the people it affects, it will affect an extremely small amount of players.
I expect that the amount of players to actually use all of their character slots on their account is tiny, and the amount of THOSE that have all the characters on the same realm even less so. If you play on two or more realms, you’re unlikely to encounter this bug at all.
Aaand, it looks like getting a blue response on the support forum about it as well as getting a GM ticket where they agreed to escalate it paid off, even if I had to raise a bit of a stink.
