So i had a discusion on the German Forums a while ago to this Theme but since i came to AD and realised that the English community has a big different way of thinking i thought why not give it a shoot here to.
So the thing is that i was wondering how are People acting towards Charm spells/Auras. There are Creatures in the World of Azeroth that are capable of using magic to seduce there victims like Sirens,Succubi or even some Nagas i think.
I liked the Idea of using it in plots to turn Group Members against each other as an interesting twist in the Szenario. Problem isâŠmost people i Know HATE there charakter beeing controlled/Manipulated. Most people will shake there head for a few seconds and even ignore it like its nothing even if there is no logical reason why they could have resisted it.
So i was just wondering how the English/international Area of RP sees stuff like this and how it could be used in RP. I could also imagine Love Potions or magical Artifacts beeing an interesting way to influence RP. Like in the Noble areas for example or somebody who wants to become a noble.
Just leave your thoughs below and i hope we can have an interesting discusion about it!
Itâs fine if itâs done well. Itâs really easy to do it for the sake of some shallow power/ERP fantasy where youâre now charmed and thereâs nothing you can do about it.
In SWTOR there was a case where some Sith ERPer had a corruptive aura that they claimed forcefully charmed every female into trying to fellate their futa dong.
If itâs done well in the narrative such as a scenario where members of a group are turned against one another, then itâs fine. It all comes down to how you do it, and more importantly why you do it. What purpose does it serve the story?
rlly situational + depends on how weird youâre making it tbh.
Generally I think most people will roll with it but the generic hubs do have their inklings to simply shrug things off if they dislike it even slightly
I feel really eeeeeh about charm effects. In RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons thereâs plenty of ways to break these. In RP you tend to either be at the mercy of /roll or the DM. And frankly itâs never been done in a fun way in my experience. Peak was when three events in a row (Albeit by different DMs so just coincidence Iâm willing to bet) Darianuth got mindcontrolled/charmed/puppetted for most of the duration of each event. First time I rolled with it, second time I got a bit eeeeh, third time he got stuck inside a Sha infesting someone and I had to sit and let the DM copy/paste their characterâs tragic backstory at me for an hour.
In all three cases, I, nor anyone besides me, was offered an opportunity to break the effect in some way. It was really anti-fun.
I would not use Charm effects in RP except as a last resort and with prior consent of the player for specific plot purposes, and if I ever did, I would offer plenty of opportunity for both the charmed character and their allies to disrupt the effect with increasing ease the longer it goes on for.
And yeah outside of events thereâs the uh⊠less than pure kind of use for it that makes the whole concept dodgy.
Yikes, why do I know this ended in some âBUT MAGIC IS RARE / DOESNâT EXIST IN MUH HOUSE GUILD HEADCANONâ?
AnywaysâŠ
Highly depending on the individual. Some people use auras in their TRP of âPeople feel X around my characterâ which can give some nice flavor. If it is not forced. âAnyone who comes closer to this character quivers in fearâ is an example that would force roleplay onto others.
Usually if it isnât âthis aura makes your character feel goodâ then itâs up to debate with the player you try to push your aura onto.
Of course it also depends on the person you try to charm. A 6000 years old kaldorei mage might be a bit less prone to get charmed than a 20 year old human baker.
Do it subtle. My suggestion is to do the whole manipulation scenario a bit less obvious. Use an illusion on the succubus (if your group doesnât have a demon hunter) that shows her as a damsel in distress and then said damsel will try to manipulate people. Pretty solid and you can reveal at the end that it was a demon in disguise the whole time.
Absolutely is. Though I would say most people see it as the following:
donât push your auras onto another character. If they want to roleplay it, they will. If not, then donât be pushy about it.
If you got an idea about love potion / seduction potion or whatever really, communicate to the person you wish to apply it to. If the person knows your interntions then everything is fine.
Iâve seen this in WoW too. Back when I was new to the server, I saw a character in Stormwind who was playing a half Draenei/worgen vampire who had a magical aura and enchanted women by her singing.
But yeah i support what you say so far. Of course there are charakters that can withstand such technices but iâm talking about the stereotypical Mercenary Franzis who actually has nothing magical about him but when it comes to stuff like this he becomes basicly immune to magic.
But i see that the English realms seem to be pretty burned by the topicLooks at the other posts and reads something about worgeneredar things that the poor little dwarf mind has now to picture out
Oh donât worry, this exists here too and its equally terribly done in most cases. Iâve encountered regular(Like not the fantasy warrior class) soldiers, who were immune to magical effects and curses simply by sheer testosterone.(Like legitimatly being a reason why a shadowball only caused said person to just shrug and crack their neck muscles)
When people try to rp a ânormalâ warrior but end up with JoJo powers anyway because they dont let themselves be vulnerable in any way, shape or form
