Practically every language is used on every continent to some extent.
For example Denmark has about 1/3rd of all native Greenlandic speakers, but I find it hard to argue that’s a European language… I would also argue English is s European language even though it is by far the most popular language in North America.
For me at least it’s about tracing the origin of the language to its place of origin until it changed so much as to be nearby unrecognisable.
The EU WoW client has a lot of weird localization code. So its likely mostly a coding issue.
Most of the Chinese players have migrated to North America, largely on Illidan US and Tichondrius US. In large part because the US client supports Chinese characters.
I am curious how or why though. I mean I know it’s there, but… why?
You can use anything from German to English to simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese in the TW servers.
Whatever has caused this must be some real old legacy code and somehow they worry removing the restriction will cause an actual server explosion? It’s weird.
They do indeed, hence we call them Germanic. And so does English. And Dutch, too, and therefore Afrikaans. Fun, right?
My guess is the same. I know its there and the EU WoW client has always been a little quirky. Probably some technical debt they just haven’t tackled yet from way back in the early 2000s when localization in C++ was a nightmare few would want to tackle.
There are thousands of Norse words in English. On top of those you got originally from being Anglish, which is a people who lived just south of modern Denmark. The British isles became so full of the Anglish in the south it became Angland. England. And then we showed up and fixed your vocabulary cause it was getting a bit too Celtic. And we replaced very very basic words, unlike the French.
Yes. Until the politics show up at which point it’s a bunch of endless deceit and BS. Hate it.
And it does all the time. I could strangle half the university history professors if I wasn’t such a pacifist.
This is why I like linguistics. Sure you can argue there’s politics if you really want to, but it’s very easy to just talk about words and where they came from without bothering ourselves about what actually happened in the Viking age or whatever.
I mean I think it’s fun that I can read half of Japanese but my grammar is utterly broken. I don’t care for the politics of why. It’s just fun.
Yeah, the political part of history bores me a bit (just how I hate politics irl), so its hard for me to get into Roman and Greek history. I do love Ancient Religions though, with all these multiple gods etc - so Ancient mythologies is a great interest.
Shiz went down.
It’s also why I love the less popular Assassin’s Creed game. Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla is amazing. Being able to see how it may have looked in those times in that kinda interactive way is soooo cool.
Visually, quite. Gameplay is trash though. Only game I really liked in that series was AC4. Oh well.
Did you know Warcraft has Scottish? Which is of course a European language but not an Indo-European one. This causes all sorts of fun like the verbs going first. That is very unusual.
The exact composition is also on YouTube but it is ridiculously difficult to find.
I like it… my first AC game was Odyssey, so I guess I like the style I met first. Odyssey, however, has too big of a map (I think it’s 4-5 times bigger then Skyrim), and while Origins has kinda dull talent tree and gear, it has the best story, map size etc, and all side quests are simple side stories (unlike in Odyssey, where you go clear camps).
Valhalla is better, but you can basically function by just using Light or Heavy attacks. and the stats are garbage.
If I had to guess it’s because the EU client has language restrictions. It only allows Russian on the Russian realms, and only English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German and Italian on the other realms. Thus Korean and Chinese have no realm that will accept those clients.
Yeah, in general, it’s most respectful and appropriate to speak the language(s) and use the alphabet of the region you’re playing in.
You can easily get away with using just the alphabet if your version of chinese can be adapted. We have arabic being spoken on our servers using the western alphabet in place of their own script.
It’s just a case of preference vs preference really. Sadly, you are coming into the servers of one preference, and it’d be unfair to force another preference on those people.
