Chromie Timewalking | Mage Tower

I’ve seen many posts about bringing back mage tower but it seems that no one has tried to give a reasonable way of getting them, most mention them buying it with gold, tokens or through reputation. Im not a big fan of rep grind of any type of grind in general so in this post ill be trying to create something polished, something that players would want to do not just for the mage tower benefits but for its challenge as well.

As everything, i have a little sad story about why one moment still haunts me to this day.
It was 7.3.5, i had just picked up the game again, my druid was level ~90 and i had just found out about this cool legendary concept. Me and my dad used to play alot back in MoP and WoD but everything changed in legion, we both felt burned out and so we took a looong break. I have big plans and so i started leveling up to get those cool legendaries i thought of as a fun and innocent concept, turns out i was wrong. A couple of weeks later me and my dad hit level 110 and we were both happy about getting our last legendary weapon, the guardian druid legendary, the model was cool and we thought nothing of it.
1 Week later i discover this thing called “mage tower”, (i barely checked wow news so i missed a lot) so i showed my dad what a cool bear we could get, all i knew is that we had to have alot of gear so set out a goal to get a minimum of 910Ilvl and a DPS-ish legendary with a fairly decent drop rate (~1%). We both got to around 900Ilvl and decided to move on to the broken shore quests. Only then i had realized we were a few days away from Battle for Azeroth’s pre-patch. I panicked and quickly hopped on my druid, all i could do is hopelessly look at the appearance as i could barely solo a normal dungeon boss, let alone a mage tower boss. I was hyped up and ready to farm reputation and items, but it was too late. Little did i know my last trip to broken shore was also my last trip to mage tower forever. The next day i woke up everything crashed on me, the pre-patch hit and i no longer was able to enter mage tower, it was devastating, i was so close to getting it yet so far and since then this memory haunts me, i grieve every other day when i see a druid using that appearance.

So finally, today i finally built up the courage to post this.
Ill be thinking of 2 variants of how you could get these appearances back, if you have feedback of ideas of your own please leave them in the comments, if you come here just to make fun of “plebs” like me and spam hate then don’t bother, you are not achieving anything and you are not cool.
With that being said, first variant:

Chromie - Mage Tower Timewalking
A simple event that happens once every 3 months or so that allows players to REPLAY mage tower to gain 1 Token, every mob/boss within mage tower is scaled accordingly to your gear so that no one is left off, the minimum item level will be LFR raid/mythic dungeon and everything above will cause everything else to scale up to provide a proper challenge.
After gaining a token you can buy 1 fragment of a mage tower appearance, at 3 fragments you can complete the mage tower legendary and gain the appearance.
With tokens you can also complete old content that is now locked behind a time-gate such as: MoP legendaries, WoD legendaires, everything before Cataclysm like the old ZG for the old weapons (excluding the mounts) to multiple legendary weapons from TBC-WoTLK and unobtainable transmogs.
Mage Tower Weapons - 3 “Legendary Fragments”
Legendary Fragments - 1 Token
(Items available to buy are subject to change, but primarily i’d want mage tower legendaries)

Chromie Timewalking - Vendor
Cut to the chase, talk to chromie to send you in a beautiful lobby decorated with each expansion’s art style where vendors of multiple expainsions await you. You can buy old transmogs/mounts including mage tower appearances with a large sum of currency and bonus currency that was once relevant during that expansion.
Mage Tower Legendary - 50k gold + “currency exclusive to legion”

But that’s about it, tell me what you think, how do you feel about this and if you ideas, please write them in the comments, ill be reading every comment.
Also please don’t come here with overwhelmingly high amounts of salt and anger, i don’t want people here shaming other players for not having X and Y, this is a creative thread is meant for open-minded people to share their take and their ideas without leaving a trail of salt behind them.

Also, think about it, blizzard has put better looking mounts compared to old ZG mounts for example but they have yet to put something better than mage tower which still begs the question if they’re ever gonna bring it back and how are they gonna bring it back.

Removing content is less time playing the game. Blizz Data people should know this as they want to retain subs.

Maybe they thought to abuse the fear of missing out to get more people to sub in legion, who knows.

it was timed, and the time has passed.
Reopening the mage tower will devalue the skins we got, and the effort people put into it, KNOWING that it was a timed chance to get those.
also specs change over time, and the magetower was tailored around the specs in that specific moment in time, accessing it with characters from different expansions would require reworking the whole encounters.

I’m all for new magetowers with new skins and stuff, but old timed rewards must stay unobtainable.

That sounds good. Just like with the Zul Aman bear slightly recolored.

Well said Kayleen !
Seasonal rewards should stay seasonal ! simple as that.

Time exclusive stuff if way older. Just looking at the Pandaria Challenge sets for instance. Including their Teleport ability that came with it. And while Mage towers were already a joke during ToS and even further during Argus the game changes afterwards were way too heavy to have them still in even if one gets scaled down in stats (something i dont trust blizzard with anyway)

Otherwise i side with Kayleen that i wouldnt mind a new mage tower with new stuff.

I agree it would devalue their skins, but considering difficulty scales up with your character, the new timewalking mage tower would be just as hard or even harder than the old one.
Plus 2 years have passed and such skins are beautiful indeed but from the friends i know, barely anyone is using them right now, i know some guy owning like 20 of them and only using 1.
Maybe adding a new mage tower appearance for us, the new players (or in my case just plain bad) could be exciting and cool, they haven’t done that yet and just as Kayleen said, it would be an excellent alternative to the original skins.

a new magetower type of content, with new skins with color palettes matching the current tier sets (hopefully ) as they did in lgion would be the best option imho.

I myself used ONLY magetower skins on my main since legion, and on at least 2 of my alts ( druid, both bear and catform, and shadow priest).

It’s not a matter of being easier or harder now, it’s a matter of being time limited, people did things, boosted alts, and spent resources to be able to complete it there and then, BECAUSE we knew it was our last chance, if we knew we could take it easy we would have perhaps wasted less resources/effort, hence it would devalue it.

artificial scarcity. a common business technique and in my opinion, a bit scummy. even more scummy when we’re talking about pixels and not a physical item. the pixels are only limited to the amount of copies the devs put out. unlike say a model which would have a limited run of only a few hundred/thousand units.

as someone who got all 32 skins or whatever, i would have no issue letting people have a chance to get these too. blizz are too hot to constantly remove items from the game. there should be at maximum 1 item and 1 title that is removed per expansion that shows you were there for that expansion. its bad enough that usually we have 4-5 glad mounts per expansion alone that become unobtainable.

not the worst idea ever. i would be careful with the gold sink though. making it cost too much would be an unfair gold sink on collectors. collectors are already picked on by blizz imo. in the same way i went for all 32 skins, collectors could quite likely want more than one item, and the cost would fast build up. i would rather go through a long questline or something. maybe even reopen the requirements of that time. i know the talents and abilities have changed but has anyone even tried to see if mage tower and WoD/MoP challenge modes etc are possible with scaling? if they actually are, then theres even less reason to not bring them back!

Yeah i completely agree, since we got Chromie as our timewalking guide, why not implement more things to her, it would only be neutral at worse, timewalking in general is cool and being able to re-explore the old content with today’s talents and abilities (everything scaled accordingly) could be really fun.

About the gold sink, i would’ve proposed an astronomical price such as 200k-500k gold seeing how rare and cool the skins are. Would probably focus more on the exclusive currency rather than gold, but there should always be gold involved in such transactions so that players have to get that gold and pay a good amount. i feels right because you are sacrificing legendaries, reagents, potions and other possible items for a cosmetic item.

meh. still not a fan of excessive high amounts of gold. mainly because:

  • those with not a lot of gold wont have a way to make the large amounts easily.
  • those who have a lot of gold are never going to have a problem getting more gold anyway.

it just appears that while they try to punish the people with lots of gold, or try take gold out of the economy, the only people they actually hurt are the players with very little gold in the first place.

if it was just a couple of items maybe i would agree. but even a tier set can be 5-9 items. that gold cost builds up fast, and we are talking about close to 300 items maybe just in relation to challenge modes and mage tower…

Having it tied to chromie could be a very nice way to introduce HD reskins of old low res tier sets.

Oh yeah absolutely, im gravitating towards making it cost a moderate amount of gold such as 50K for a legion legendary since those are 1, tier sets and all of that could cost somewhere between 2K-10K a piece depending on how rare/old the items were.

Yeah, blizzard could make incredible use of chromie as she is basically promoting timewalking and it would only make sense players could get these exclusive items with a little twist and a remodel/reskin.

Also what are your thoughts on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNtEr-ra__c, Claws of Shirvallah making a comeback in a HD form, i think it could be pretty neat for the poor ferals out there who have been wanting this since WoD.

As a player that joined in the last 3 weeks of legion, the only transmog i really wanted were the mage tower ones for mage and warlock, and i was unable to get them simply because i had no time.Whilst i do think there should be a cost to enter,i definitely think people like me who could not get the gear to get the transmog fast enough should get a chanche too

You know we had a mount for 5 million right? 200-500k is not astronomical in the sense of gold sinks in wow anymore

Where do you draw the line then? If legion mage tower skins are available again then I’d like to get phoenix mounts from pandaria CMs, WoD CM weapon transmogs on this account, atiesh and immortal title with black proto

You countered your own point and hit the nail on the head.
Exclusivity ensures people stick around.

Yeh also add gladiator mounts from old seasons.
And dont forget gear transmog from MOP challenges.

Or how about you just leave last things that actually have atleast some value, like they are? Seasonal sets are for that season. U didnt earn those things, keep ur hands away from them. You can earn current season looks/items if u deserve them.

Also atiesh, wod cm, trial of crusader horse mount, plagued and black drakes

/edit:
also using word “deserve” is a bit cringe. You can earn them but lets be real. We’re playing dead video game.
