Classic: Playing as Your Past Self

Not sure if this has been covered already but:
I’ve been playing WoW on and off for years, and only started RPing about two years ago, so I missed RPing through quite a lot. What do people see as the limits and drawbacks of playing your past self in WoW Classic?

Limited character development.
You already know how and where they end up by the time you made them in retail, so you can’t -really- do a whole lot with them without retconning their current version.

Also, you can only do it if you’re one of the vanilla races. So about 95-98% of Horde RPers (blood elves) aren’t going to be able to do that.

Some RPers / RP characters claim to be from “new content” zones (Gilneas / Kul Tiras / Draenor…), and that can’t be RPed in Classic.

For some RPers / RP characters, their visual attire and/or equipment is a crucial element of their character. That can be a problem in Classic.

I prefer to see wow classic as an alternative timeline.
One where the dev’s didnt screw the lore over.

This. It’s impossible to have the same history as the one your character already got since you will meet other characters than you have accounted for, so either make a new one or treat it as a different timeline

I’d much rather make a new character for new experiences, maybe with a couple of familiar details as a tribute to the original. Retreading old paths as a new person, you go forward untethered.

In the end I decided to go for a new character for many of the above reasons - because as said I realised the interactions would be completely different (especially since most people who have gone from AD to HW have changed also started anew).

I’m doing a new character separate from my current roster. 3 of my characters are expansion races anyway so they can’t exist in Classic and I can’t be bothered to try and fit my classic characters into retail lore so separate character.

I could theoretically make an alternative timeline high elf version of my char and use a human to portray her, but… a part of me really wanted to play a gnome. So, my gnome was born. I don’t have a backstory or even a first name for him, but he’s definitely there. Will think of all that stuff when I start RPing him.

I made a younger version of me, but after one (new) guild meet, I realised you have no free character development. I’m gonna replace her by a new char with a bit different name.

What do you mean, no free character development?

The past of Hathorion is written, so for a younger version the future is written. So the young one cant make her own / different choises. That is no fun to RP, with a new guild, tauren around her who were not there in Hathorions past.

If you assumed it is an alternative universe and the path she takes can be different to her “real” one, she definitely could develop.

I have considered that option too. And probably the whole server will develop as an alternative timeline . Well, I didn’t delete young Hath, so it still is an option .

My chars messed with alternative timelines before it was crappy draenor  so i don’t realy want to rp it over again.
