Colour dyes

I was wondering if WoW will ever introduce a colour dye system to sets for that extra customization?

Or at least to a cosmetic like aliasa’s bonnet? (For those who don’t know its a cloth hood which is tansmogable on all armour types).

I’d love to dye the hood bright green to make my hunter look like a mountaineer.

Nope, they are not gonna retroactively add dyes to old items. In case of that specific hood it wouldn’t be a big issue but for most armor pieces it would look just bad. Converting armor to greyscale and then applying color to it will make everything monochromatic. And that would make armor just look worse. Also colors are usually tied to specific activites or diffucluties.

Making that so only specific elements on the armor can be colored or applying different colors to different elements is out of the question because there is no way the art team would go and redo all the armors to work with that system.

Maybe at some point in the future they could introduce some special armor that will have an ability to customize it’s color but it would be only specific pieces of armor specificly designed for that.

As I get from how they explained this subject, no, and it’s better if they won’t ever (unless they paint the variants first hand) .

This is because, artistically speaking, the colors you see now are painted like an oil painting, but in digital. This means that to obtain the final color, you have to interweave several different colors underneath, just like normal painters do. This would mean neutralize said color, and re-apply a new one on top of that, but this would stand out just as much as those old vanilla armors, that would just look out of place in the wow we have now.

So the only reasonable thing would be to paint a set of different textures beforehand (just like they already do for color variants) and let people combine them as they want.
