Comparing Old WoW cutscenes to new WoW cutscenes

Nagrand TBC

You thickheads ever consider the arcane wheelchair just tongue in cheek? When did the playerbase get so dimwitted that something like this actually has to be explained.

I still believe the best cutscenes with in-game graphics (ie. not prerendered) were in WoD and Legion.

WoW still does Machinima-style cutscenes though - just look at the destruction of Dalaran cinematic. If you’re going to compare Wrathgate to anything then you should compare it to that kind of cinematic, not to some side quest’s cutscene that was slapped together in an hour.

They were great except for Khadgar’s disney/marvel-level-of-writing one liners >:I

Yeah i liked the magni and alleria one during the leveling campaign.

I’ll take the fact that our actual characters are in the cut scenes not over janky 17yo spit and tape stuff.
I remember being blown away at the time because there were no mid patch cutscenes at the time. Time moves on. Get over it.

It has nothing to do with: ohh this is the future, time to move on :older_adult:

Absolutely not. Current wow animations are straight up low quality.

This was released 14 years ago:
The Wrathgate

And it’s straight up better than most of what they release today imo. Not just because it’s more epic(, and yes it is more epic and cooler), but it’s also just straight up better quality. I don’t know about you, but I expect to play a videogame, not just to access these spammy cosmetic rewards to dress up my characters.

Don’t try to appeal to logic with this game.

For example, a shield is used to defend from an attack. When you block an attack with your shield, the shield absorbs the force impact and needs to release the force on the thing (read: arm) that is attached.

Guess how physics work in this game if the token character uses it in combat.

It’s because these cutscenes are being shat out with badly written lore. Aside of the overall story content of those cutscenes, they are quite good. Eh, minus maybe the bad face animations, but that’s because they use both not-optimized models + existing emotes to create those cutscenes.

Ironically SWTOR from Bioware managed to make the conversations look better with the very same tech.

I wouldn’t say so. The story boarding and execution had more vision. Everything else is actually more inferior in quality.

  1. It is pre-rendered, so your own character can’t appear in it
  2. The visual quality is very low on the models due to tech limitations and age
  3. All the characters use pre-defined emotes instead of manual animations. Blizzard even once spoke about making that cutscene by inviting in players to ā€œroleplay itā€ while they took the render shots with spectator mode because it was (and I quote) ā€œeasier to do than animatingā€.

Honestly, if it can float, there is no point for the wheels.
If I was him, I would instead have a comfortable floating couch/sofa.

The wheelchair is part of a stupid fad that does not get that wheelchairs in a high fantasy + steampunk hybrid is a stupid and boring idea. If one has crippling issues they either get cured or they would find a cooler way to move around than a wheelchair.

Tell me you dont read quest text witouth telling me your dont read quest text.

Quality is not only decided by graphics alone, and graphics are also not only decided by resolution/pixels too, and whether my char is in the cinematic doesn’t matter to me as much. But even if we compare graphics, they are better, because art style is part of graphics and art style is straight up better. Also the facial expressions in the wrathgate cinematic are good, while in the TWW cinematic they look broken. No, the 2009 cinematic is straight up better quality-wise than the 2025 cinematic. Those little technical details don’t matter as much as the overall impression of perceived quality. Quality is not decided by how expensive the technology is.
