Complaint about Assassination Rogue

Alright, let me start with I love Assassination, I’m playing it for M+ and using my own stylized build that nets me about ~70-80k overall dps in M+ and solid single target.

However, I noticed one really… really irritating thing and I feel like blizzard should change this.

Poisons are so week to the point that it’s laughable.

On bosses I’m having 90%+ uptime on envenom with some bosses having 95% envenom uptime, yet my melee, yes MELEE damage passes my deadly poison.

Assassination was always about smart play, pooling and carefully planning, there were times where if you mastered this you’d be able to do dps so insane it would drop people’s jaws.

Having awesome envenom uptime in legion essentially meant your king’s bane would melt bosses, but right now envenom uptime is so unnecessary and weak to the point where perfectly playing your class and having awesome envenom uptime wouldn’t increase your dps at any significant level.

Dear blizzard, when working on assassination for shadowlands, please consider the essential things for assassin rogues that made them fun.

Bring back king’s bane, make poisons relevant again and make it so having high uptime on envenom be a very good dps boost.

Bring back death from above, dispatch, gouge, and more essentially please change back mastery to the legion counter part or atleast give an option for people who love poison more to go poison.

And tbh, the current version of envenom should also increase deadly poison damage, a cool idea is to do this : envenom also doubles the damage increase for poisons from mastery.

That is all.

I’m gonna be honest, the poisons hit harder if you take more mastery however its not a prio stat for Assa right now. I agree changes need to be made but Assa isn’t in a bad spot right now , if you want to ask for changes Sub is in dire need of fixing, only being able to do reliable single target with adds so it can spray shurikuns for faster combo points

things I DO agree with, gouge on all specs plx yes

on a side note, if you take double does in your gear a lot you DO get rewarded for poison uptime since your mutilate hit bonus damage often if you are good at keeping envenom up, that is the recommended direction id take if you want to feel some reliance to poison uptime and envenom (also this is the best single target trait you have so its not exactly bad, that is Assa’s best asset atm in M+ it brings single target damage )

Not a pro-rogue here, I’ll tell my opinion to debate on it.

If they buff deadly poison, they would have to nerf our other abilities to keep our total damage the same. It sounds good for class fantasy, but here is the thing.

In pvp, since deadly brew is removed, rogues use wound poison instead of deadly poison. They give up damage so they can have healing reduction debuff. However if you nerf other abilities and buff deadly poison, pvp assa rogues who dont use deadly poison will be nerfed without anything in return.

So there should also be some compensation in that regard.

I prefer Legion rogue over BFA rogue but definitley prefer wod over both handsdown cause I felt like my class did its job. “Assassination” rogue and all that good stuff, as a whole I think the damage of the class feels considerably underwhelming when placed against moderately prepared players who know what to look for etc when I size the class up side to side with other melee DPS.

With how it functions I dislike the changes they made to keystones as it kinda but not entirley invalidated the flexibility of the spec compared to outlaw and other melee dps being a matter of just doing something different in their rotation slightly and no trait changes really needed same again for talents whereas with sin rogue as far as im aware not only do you change stat prio, but traits & talents meaning you will always fall short in some regard of content as you’re not as well rounded of a class without needing to do big swaps in stuff.

Having to go from agi > haste to crit / mast is a kinda big deal with how much junk I now have in my bags, legit was easier for me to learn outlaw and in the short term performed easily better than I did in main spec and saved me hoarding gear.

To mention of deadly brew, talent, even I accept it was derp overpowered and made assassin into a monster pvp wise, the combination of both poisons even with wounding being weaker was way to powerful

Secondly iv tested this today, deadly poison accounts for around 15% of your damage on average (assuming your not insane stacked into mastery it would I expect go up then some but not much ) this works out pretty balanced for poison choosing being relevant, if deadly did greater than 25% damage total then wounding may as well be removed due to the fact its function would be destroyed by the option to do much greater raw numbers

I think the deadly poison itself is fine, right now it makes wounding for pvp worth bringing to your team still since the 30% mortal strike effect will be more pressure than the 15% extra personal damage for healers to deal with , and 15% damage plus all your bleeds does make a fair amount of damage come from dots, I’d argue its about right. Sorry OP I do think rogue needs some love but it’s not poisons or assassin in general I’m thinkin about for rogues needing help with , I say it again assassin is in a good spot right now, it can perform in raid, m+ and pvp well, assassin is arguably the most flexible spec of all three for value to learn and play right now, outlaw being the poorest overall pvp wise and sub being really hard pushed in pve as simply weaker, pvp sub also has issues it’s not bad but it lacks damage that other options provide

It’s not about whether it performing good or not.

It’s about optimizing your envenom and executing your rotation perfectly hardly ever increases your dps significantly.

The difference between now and legion and previous iterations was that if the rogue was smart enough, knew how to pool energy and had some insane envenom uptime, they would do some scary dps.

In legion, assassination rogue was regarded as a very very easy spec, but that was the beauty of it, as a rogue when I played my cards right, the dps was so insane and the rewards for pooling, playing carefully and planning my dps payed off, now there’s hardly ever an significance or difference.

It feels like everything is streamlined and there hardly ever is dps in my control.

Let’s be honest, it was loads of RNG. Does the trait proc on my Vanish Rupture? How many Poison Bombs do I spawn? Maybe late Legion was less random I don’t remember but Nighthold and before was super random. Little correlation between how well I played and the DPS I did on any given attempt.

AoE was even sillier. Poison Bomb was just like Twilight Devastation. Oh I proceed on this pack, sick now I’ve done huge damage and that one proc is the vast majority of my damage.

Yep, this is Assa in a nutshell. You can try hard if you want but it doesn’t really matter. Part of what makes it such a good progress spec, base level is easy and minmaxing is of low consequence so you can focus on the boss easier.

Of course it’s also the flexibility and the DoTs ticking even when your uptime sucks because messy progress attempt.
