Connecting to WoW causes Wi-Fi Disconnect

Hello!

Whenever I connect to WoW, my wow client freezes and I get stuck on ‘Disconnecting’. Simultaneously, my ping suddenly spikes; my discord ms jumps from ~30ms to ~500 - 5000 ms.

I have had this issue for a month now with this specific router. I connected via ethernet and there were no issues. I recently disconnected it and it was working fine for a couple of days but now that I have restarted my laptop (previously only slept it).

Previously, I tried a lot of different things such as:

  1. Flushing DNS
  2. Ensuring drivers are updated
  3. Restarting the router, resetting the router
  4. Updating the graphics card etc.

I’ve tried a number of things although it feels redundant considering my laptop works fine with the ethernet and also with other Wi-Fi connections.

Connecting to wow via Wi-Fi works fine without my laptop charger but it was fine WITH the charger just a few hours ago.

Would love some suggestions/guidance on this.

To brief it since 23rd December:
Current Internet Service Provider (ISP): Laptop + Charger + Wifi = Fine
Laptop + Charger + Wifi + WoW/League/Fall Guys = Nope (Worked for the last 2-3 days)
Laptop + Charger + Wifi + WoW Private Server = Fine
Laptop + Charger + Ethernet + WoW/League/Fall Guys = Fine
Laptop + No charger + Wifi = Fine Laptop + No charger + Wifi + WoW/League/Fall Guys = Fine

But with every other Wifi connection: Laptop + Charger + Wifi + WoW/League/Fall Guys = Fine

Sounds definitely like a router or related issue. If I understood right:

You used to use cable and everything worked fine.
You switched to Wifi and it stopped working
But then it works if you don’t have your laptop charger plugged.
But it doesn’t work if you plug in your laptop charger?

if so, it really sounds like a some sort of interference issue from the charger, or electricity outlet the charger is plugged in or possibly from the laptop itself when the charger is plugged in.

Have you tried using a different charger? Or different electricity outlet for the charger? Or if possible another laptop with the charger and the current router?

As for suggestions, you could see if you can adjust the wifi settings to a different channel in case it automatically picks some congested one or one where the charger causes interference.

Alternatively, if you are using 2.4 GHz Wifi try to switch to 5 Ghz and other way around and see if that helps.

My dearest friend Grelier,

I have just changed my preferred band (network channel) to 5GHz and it has started working once again!

I can not thank you enough. I would make a Tauren just to carry your sweet gnome butt on my shoulders and elevate you to the level you deserve.

I am a bit sceptical about how long this will work for but if it’s a forever fix then I will offer a forever kiss.

Many thanks.

EDIT:
Looks like I spoke too hastily.

It worked temporarily, I was about to run from Crossroads to Camp Taurajo but disconnected along the way. Whenever I try to launch wow, all my loaded videos stop loading and calls disconnect.

And yes, you understood correctly!

Doh.

What wifi router you are using? If it is from ISP or some sort of combined DSL/wifi/router device I would recommend trying to replace the wifi part with a dedicated wifi router as they usually get more reliable updates etc. My wifi at home improved by a considerable margin when I replaced aging VDSL-modem/router/wifi combo device with a dedicated DSL-device and wifi/router.

Depending on exact devices and connection type you have now you could try getting either a wifi router or wifi access point and use your current router (just diable the wifi in the current router).

I would also consider trying to use a different charger on your laptop to test that theory.
