Correlation between profile picture and perceived tone

I want a feature to upload a voice recording of myself and link it to my profile on the forums. So people can listen to it and read my posts in my 10/10 ASMR voice and barely irritating German accent.

For me that’s the thing, I both voice act posters based on their avatar and have slightly different style of writing depending on to whom I am replying.

Now that’s genuinely interesting, in an actual professional sense for me, because I -am- a Voice Actor by trade (Currently Audio Books) and am always interested as to how people perceive characters voices based on just their appearance, or indeed in text when no actual cues are given(By that I mean if an author has written “They have a broad welsh accent” then you know what you are getting, but if no indication is given, would be interesting as to how people mentally ‘assign’ voices to characters. Interesting and also potentially useful in my career

What audio books have you done? I’m interested now.

@Pod, so are you reading this in your head with a Troll accent?

Not just appearances tbh.
It’s a combination of:

  1. memory of how NPCs of that race/class sound in-game
  2. some moderate lore knowledge about the typical behaviour or values of said race
  3. some forum experience, knowing familiar faces and in what spirit they usually post their statements

All together helps to build up some voice for me.

For example I will use Nagrash, hopefully he doesn’t mind.

  1. Maghar orc male voice is deep low and very manly
  2. Most memorable character for me with familiar name to his is Grommash. His brutal reinforced chewing lines at the dark portal comes to mind.
  3. Nagrash usually is a lighthearted, friendly poster, with some nice ironic remarks here and there. I would use Saurfangs mimic in safe heaven as an example of how he uses a sequence of poker face and unexpected line to stop Thrall blaming him for bringing undead rogues to him with. I followed them.

Now accumulating these points I voice line Nagrash in my head hehe. :exploding_head:

Dat is right, Mon.

As best as my knowledge of Troll accent allows me to :sob:

So far I’ve a few freebie examples I did, to build up a bit of a portfolio, not sure if I can post links, but if you go YouTube and look up “A Warsong Tale: Grommash, Hero of War and Story” That’s my VA work, I did another piece for some guys who have been permission to write stuff for a Wargames company in the UK who produced a game called ‘Guildball’ called ‘Tales of the Free Cities’, where I voiced a character called “Hammer” but the project I’m most excited about, (and has a chance of making me some actual proper money!) is Audio Book narrating a series of four published novels, soon to be five, called the Dun an Doras series, by an author called Gemma Tarr (Yes I am allowed to blurt out titles and names, oddly this cropped up in a conversation I had with her last week) , which are amazing tales, brilliant setting, and hopefully the titular story, ‘Dun an Doras’ will be completed in time for Christmas. That’s the current target, but yeah, this will not be freebie work, but actually paid by sales results.

Honestly? Dream job.

Never. The only time I perceive people’s tone differently is when I’ve read a lot by that poster and can estimate what kind of tone they’re trying to use.

all your draeneis sound the same

If all of my dreanei’s sounded the same, that would be because they are all me.

Personally, I read everything on the internet with my inside voice, WoW forums included.

The only thing that I have noticed on the forums is that a lot of human paladins seem to be “try-hard” roleplayers, especially when they get triggered on how Horde paladins aren’t real paladins. 8 ou 10 times everytime I see someone insult someone using the other person’s race and/or faction it is by a human paladin.
It’s a shame, because I’ve considered countless times making a human paladin because of lore reasons but I don’t want to be associated by that “human paladin stereotype”.

When in doubt touch anything that glows :hugs::sweat_smile:

The only connection I make is between post count and character level. The trolls always have a random level and a very low post count
