For me it’s probably 8/10.
Corruption has a lot of the ingredients I look for in an item design system.
The theme is fitting – Old Gods and tentacles and eyes and so on.
It provides some cool visuals – it’s nice to see such visual enhancements outside of trinket effects.
It allows for a lot of item tinkering – managing Corruption feels a bit like managing hit percentage in the old days. And evaluating the ideal Corruption effects is a bit like looking at trinket effects.
It adds excitement to looting – the next item you find could be the perfect one you’re hoping for!
There’s a lot of customization and uniqueness in the system – I’d wager that my Priest is a more unique Priest in BfA than it has ever been before. Very few Priests have a selection of gear that’s akin to mine.
It adds a lot of character power – unlike when you get a pair of boots that are 5 item levels higher than the boots you already have and the upgrade is so miniscule that it doesn’t really have any notable effect on your gameplay, then Corruption really gives you unlimited powaaaaa!!! You can feel the change in your gameplay when you stack way too much Corruption, or you get that perfect Corruption effect for your playstyle.
And it’s new – unlike every item design in the past which has been old and dated and rehashed well beyond the expiration date. It is actually exciting and fun to dig into new things in the game. It makes it stay fresh and intriguing, rather than become stale and routine.
So those are 8 positive points for me. So 8 points it gets.
Then I have 2 things I don’t like (hence 8/10).
There are a lot of Corruption kiss effects, but the curse effects are all static and pre-determined. That feels underwhelming, that the system provides so much on one hand and so little on the other.
The acquisition of Corruption effects is a bit too random, especially when not all specs benefit equally from all of them, and some can be way more powerful than others in various scenarios.
So yeah, 8/10. It rubs me the right way.
