Corruption

As a healer, corruption seems like saying to DPS “hey, not only can you stand in the fire, but doing so will give you big damage!”. That plus rng-overload gives a max of 3/10 from me.

However, procs of TD on my disc priest have made the laborious task of multiple adds much quicker, so she gives it a 7/10 based on her experiences of world content and visions only.

1/10 Just get a Lucky RNG drop and can top the charts.

Acquisition method: 1. Pure RNG, no targeting at all, no BLP at all.

Effects: 2. Stats are dull but tried and tested, loses all other marks for RNG proc damage that can’t be controlled or played around and ultimately devalues the importance of class gameplay.

Balance: 3, previously 1. Things are getting better, but the ridiculous variance in value of corruption (avoidance vs infinite stars) and lack of gameplay interaction drags it down still.

Kiss / Curse: 3. Kiss curse is cool, but it’s supposed to be used to highlight items of significance with unique effects, not as a generic affix system that applies to all gear.

Resistance system: 2. Tying it to something as universal, but also timegated and grindy as the cloak was a poor move. As was using corruption resistance as a psudo soft nerf to content because it forces people to hold gear they can’t yet use.

Theme: 4. Old God corrupts our stuff, we learn to handle that corruption and use it to defeat him. Bit derivative but ok, makes sense. (This isn’t gameplay or systems related so its half points in my overall score).

Overall score: 2.2/10

1/10 before i got TD r3
10/10 after

Totally agree with the analysis of Ellipsis. Just want to add 1/10 for the fact that it ruins your transmog with a purple smudge and there is no way to disable it.

If my english whas any beter i would have worded it like that.

Bane Voice

"You think the smudge is your adversary? But you merely adopted the purple, I was born in it, molded by it. I haven’t seen my character since I was level 39, now my transmog is nothing but BLINDING!

The void betrays you, because it belongs to me!"

Lets be real BFA is beyond salvation at this point, therefore i believe corrupted gear is good experiment for future and it is good that has been conducted.Personally i would not mind if they do more changes and some test systems even.

Love the system

but the issue is the balance to me, and the fact you rely on damage procs rather than your class

It would be more fun if it was the cd reduction ones, stat procs, stat from all sources ect types only

And not a death beam deleting everything in your path ( Twi devesation ) or inf stars that just deletes bosses

For me it’s probably 8/10.

Corruption has a lot of the ingredients I look for in an item design system.

The theme is fitting – Old Gods and tentacles and eyes and so on.

It provides some cool visuals – it’s nice to see such visual enhancements outside of trinket effects.

It allows for a lot of item tinkering – managing Corruption feels a bit like managing hit percentage in the old days. And evaluating the ideal Corruption effects is a bit like looking at trinket effects.

It adds excitement to looting – the next item you find could be the perfect one you’re hoping for!

There’s a lot of customization and uniqueness in the system – I’d wager that my Priest is a more unique Priest in BfA than it has ever been before. Very few Priests have a selection of gear that’s akin to mine.

It adds a lot of character power – unlike when you get a pair of boots that are 5 item levels higher than the boots you already have and the upgrade is so miniscule that it doesn’t really have any notable effect on your gameplay, then Corruption really gives you unlimited powaaaaa!!! You can feel the change in your gameplay when you stack way too much Corruption, or you get that perfect Corruption effect for your playstyle.

And it’s new – unlike every item design in the past which has been old and dated and rehashed well beyond the expiration date. It is actually exciting and fun to dig into new things in the game. It makes it stay fresh and intriguing, rather than become stale and routine.

So those are 8 positive points for me. So 8 points it gets.

Then I have 2 things I don’t like (hence 8/10).

There are a lot of Corruption kiss effects, but the curse effects are all static and pre-determined. That feels underwhelming, that the system provides so much on one hand and so little on the other.

The acquisition of Corruption effects is a bit too random, especially when not all specs benefit equally from all of them, and some can be way more powerful than others in various scenarios.

So yeah, 8/10. It rubs me the right way. :purple_heart:

I struggle to call this character power, the only ones that feel like that to me are the % stat and maybe ineffable truth. The rest just feel like random damage that isn’t tied to my character at all.

Wouldn’t call “Do I want to move out of an eye or not” a playstyle decision.

This seems to be a thread to score quick likes for OP.

The way you obtain these pieces are pure garbage, so…3/10

I would give it a 10, because I love the RNG. That feeling of not getting the corrupted piece / pieces you need is amazing! That is what I pay monthly for.
It’s so great with things that procs, that you have no control over! :innocent: You are just using your abilities and suddenly you have top dmg with infinite stars, without doing anything. I love it

Well it adds power then.
If I do a World Quest to kill 20 boars and I get a pair of boots with a higher item level, then nothing changes even if my characters gets a little bit stronger on paper. It isn’t noticeable and the gameplay feels the same.
But if I equip a pair of boots with Twilight Devastation, then the gameplay experience of killing 20 boars gets slightly different. The added power feels impactful.
I like that.

Or click the cloak button.
But those seem like good playstyle decisions to me.
If you’re a tank or just have confidence in your health, you may sometimes want to just soak that damage in favor of not having to move. I do that sometimes.
Again, to each his own, but I like this. I wish the curse effects were more varied and plentiful, but some is to me better than none.

I like it when my actions have consequence, and the value of those actions is amplified by increased power from items. A twilight devastation proc diminishes the value of my actions relative to the whole, and takes away from consequences of my gameplay.

There’s an impact, sure, but not in a way that to me feels healthy. I think twilight devastation is without a shadow of a doubt the worst thing to be added to this game from a gameplay perspective since as far back as I can comfortably remember.

Randomly obtained, high variance aoe damage proc that has no bearing on a player’s ability to execute their aoe rotation, and is randomly available to all classes and specs on any piece of gear.

I see what you did there .

Sure. I’d say there’s two camps to this, sort of.

Some people like power that’s static and controlled, because then the actions of your character can be re-produced. Much like playing Street Fighter II you can practice to perfection.
The progression raiders definitely seem to want this, because it plays into the trial-and-error playstyle of overcoming challenging content.

Then there are the players who play more leisurely and mostly seek to progress their character for its sake alone, rather than overcoming challenging content.
And for that audience there’s a lot more satisfaction in seeing 20 boars die in a spectacular way because a Corruption effect procced at the right time after your character got those fancy pair of boots with Twilight Devastation, as opposed to knowing that the 20 boars died 0.5 seconds faster because of the extra stats from your pair of boots with +5 item levels.

Gran Turismo vs. Mario Kart, sort of. :yum:

I think neither is particularly healthy for the longevity of a game that has to at least try to be all things to all people, and corruption is way too far towards the mario kart end of the spectrum.

I like when things that happen to or around my character allow my character to then interact with them to achieve a spectacular or stunning result. A great, if a little powerful, example right now would be the bracers from mechagon, at this point ubiquitously known as “The Fire Mage Bracers” for what they allow fire mages to do within their combust window.

That’s a unique item or effect, interacting with the design of a class, to allow a player the opportunity to perform and get not only statistically better, but more powerful feeling results.

Obviously putting a weird on use effect on every single piece of gear is a terrible idea, but it’s just one example of how items can supplement or augment the feel of a class and allow them to do mario kart level things, without the game just doing those things for me.
