I’ll try to explain.
OW used to have a system with loot boxes(much like the satchels we get in WoW). This was until a few months ago. You played games, and depending on some criteria, you got a loot box that could contain one or more skins and some other things(icons, emotes, voice lines). None of this cost money. There were new and cool skins regulary. A loot box was obtained every time you leveled(levels was infinite, personally I only got to level 600 something), you could get a loot box if you queued as a less desired role(tank, support), as in LFG in WoW. First game of the day, etc.
However, next to these loot boxes(which are like the satchels in WoW, maruk hun spoils and similar), you earned a currency, so that you could save enough currency to buy skins you wanted but had not been lucky to get from a loot box yet. The earn rate for the currency was decent.
You could also buy loot boxes for real money, but there was no way you needed to do that.
To me this system worked really well, and it was fun.
Then, in october iirc… OW2 came out, and that with loot boxes gone. Leveling gone too. Now we have a battle pass. I bought the first battle pass to try it.
What happened to the skins was that all new skins got locked behind the battlepass, and even when you have the battlepass, you have to play a certain amount to level your battlepass enough to get all the stuff you paid to get access too. In my case I only got halfway through the pass by the time I paid for ran out, and lost half the stuff that was in it. Then the new battlepass came out and, and I didn’t buy that. What I am left with then is old skins for free that I already have(skins from the original game), and some bland boring skins as we see in WoW now(which is why I fear WoW is about to head the same way). If I want anything new, I have to buy it for real money or buy another battlepass I probably won’t get through. You earn a very tiny amount of currency in OW2 too, but it’s so little that you have to do dailies every day for 9 months(?) to be able to buy ONE skin.
I hope this cleared it up a bit, but maybe I explained it poorly.
