Could the "tank role" be made more newbie friendly?

I don´t really see how but asking nevertheless since my brain only has two peas orbiting a grain of sand.

Tanks seem to be in high demand, I really wanted to get into tanking as a casual but it´s almost impossible since you need to know the routes, mechanics and practically have the most knowledge in the group in regard to every aspect of the dungeon. I can be a moron and still DPS which I do well only requiring a few vital pieces of information during an encounter, what to avoid and what to interrupt, otherwise I just follow the tank around like a good dog.

I wish it was easier to pick up tanking, maybe I am just not cut out for it as my sense of direction is lousy.

I am asking this because most newer folks coming into WoW rarely take up the role of tanking, even fewer than normal these days.

It’s not that hard really, not like they release new dungeons every other day lol. You just learn mechanics, a good route and do it for the whole expansion pretty much.

For now most dungeons seem very lineair, not much to choose from route-wise. So that already is relatively simple.

Then you just have to learn the basics of getting + maintaining aggro, positioning (usually face all the mobs away from the rest of the group) and using your defensives.

But, imo, the difference between a bad dps and a good dps also has a direct impact on how difficult you have it as tank. So there’s also that (go with friends if you can, randoms in low keys seem to be … Horrible).

It’s been a few days (years) since I was at the top of my game, but I was pretty decent at tanking. It just comes as you go.

Don’t be afraid to get flamed for not knowing about a skippable pack, or for messing up a mechanic. You find out then and learn, it’s no big deal. It’s just a mindset. Though, a guide or two before stepping into a raid might be a good idea.

The more important thing is to make tanks fun to play, because then people’s minds start going “hmm, what about this talent, or what if I do x,y and z?” and suddenly they’re invested and becoming better and more confident.

Tank and spank, don´t listen to the speeders. take your time and have faith in your healer.

what I hate, is judging how much trash you need for that m+ keystone. I wiped the intime of a +5 because 2% trash missing and the only place we had trash left in De Other Side was in the Trader-Room.

But I already pulled more trash than usual. So rip.

Maybe include an interface that shows how much % a trashmob gives when you mouseover it or something without additional addon-use

Its not a learning curve, its the dedication to filling a role that have the highest likelihood to get flamed if things go wrong.
There are very few dedicated tanks, and those that choose this. Have guilds then play with. The rest are just swapping spec to get their own agenda done faster.

Maybe if people were friendlier, more people would try to tank.
It’s like sticking your hand in a pool of flesh eating fish.

Download addon called Mythic Dungeon Tool and then google routes but I suggest you

From that video you can also import routes into your mythic dungeon tool addon and from there learn it what to pull, what to avoid and also adjust the route for yourself

I think that is also included into mythic dungeon tool but I also recommend downloading Angry Keystones addon which will show you how much time you have left for +3, for +2 and yeah completion

Another tip is to look at loot table and decide which dungeon drops most bis items for your spec ( for me bloodk dk that is necrotic wake) and just spam that dungeon until you pick everything thats to know

oof. i felt that. im basically the same whats tanking concerned.

i d love an in game function to help me with m+ %s. or at least i wished mdt was able to be displayed in game without having to have a separate window/addon open all the time. kind of like a layover or something. could also make it toggleable so its not a black and white thing.

i know for most people its just a matter of time and habbit but i tried that and i literally got a memory like a sieve. :frowning:

Think ya just over thinking it. Literally took 2 days to learn the routes for the next 2 yesrs. And you learn as you go along. Oh this pack nearly killed me “checks combat log - was massive strike for 20k”, oh thats a cone attack x mob does, ok I’ll dodge that next time etc.

All the dungeons are mega linear, the routes are very easy to learn. Best advice for tanking… just do it. Start low and work ya way up slowly. Soon as you get the mechanics down ya laughing for the rest of the expansion. Probs done around 10 of each dungeon in 4-10 keys, and know 95% off everything in their.

just do rhcs/m0s and learn it on the way. Or if you don’t want to do that there are thousands of guides on the internet about the tanking strats you can read through them in like an hour and after that you know everything.

They should make earthwarden shaman tank with two buttons rotation, DPS-Aggro and Self heal buttons.

Tanks are very easy as class; what you’re asking for is making the dungeons easier.

I wonder if the difficulty of the dungeons and the shortage of tanks in related. It would be an interesting question to answer.

It’s not hard to tank at all. I’d say it’s easier than dpsing actually.
I started out tanking in level dungeons, and slowly learned how my class worked, routes, pulls when to use my cd’s.

I highly recommend also going in as DPS first, knowing the dungeon, and watching other people tank. Can be extremely valuable

I don’t think so. Dungeons are not that hard to learn and play well enough to not make your group suffer. I think most people who is pugging, avoid tanking because of the treatment we get. Like, if someone can’t handle mindless bashing for no reason, or for someone else’s mistake, it’s really better if they don’t play tank specs.

I just got called a noob by 2k achievement players when tanking because they were trying to skip a boss you can’t skip :woman_facepalming:t2:

On top of that they were pulling everything and anything.
