Could use some help about professions

Just trying to get the hang of Wow again, but feel like i am failing.

What happened? I played WOW about 12 years ago, and decided to retry it now. So i bought a six-month subscription (saw it when starting D3), and thought that i would finish something I started 15 years ago: getting mastery levels in professions.
Well, maybe not the smartest of choices, but that was my goal. So, I made seven different characters, thinking that they could benefit from each other (i remembered from earlier days that it was hard to get leather if you had no skinner yourself) and I started playing them.

And it was fun! Up to the point were i became stuck with certain characters that could barely cope with single monsters (especiallay around level 20-29; some of my characters failed to pick up decent armor, making them too weak, almost impossible to play; I even had to restart one and change the type of my rogue -subtlety is apparently not my thing) but afetr level 30, all was well.

So I finished the classic professions (except Mining, up to today i was never able to find dark mithril trainer) and wanted to go to the outland professions

And now i am stuck: skinning was easy to bring to 75, but for leatherworking, i need a massive amount of leather and all kind of other stuff, i never even encountered. Fishing is also easy to get to 75, but cooking requires fish i have not even caught once (lots of barbed fish, but apparrently i need HUGE barbed fish) etc. I do not recall it was such a burden 12 years ago???

Am i doing something wrong? My best character is level 60 now, so i can easily walk everywhere with her, but that’s kinda cheating?

Does anyone has tips for me?

This site is quite good for helping/pointing you in the right direction

  • Unless you have something specific in mind that requires having old expansion professions, don’t bother with any pre-dragon flight profession levelling. The end game doesn’t require those at all, and the dragon flight crafting require you to only learn the profession, not level up the pre dragon flight version.

  • The gear you will get from pre-dragon flight will get replaced very quickly as you level up. Don’t spend a lot of gold or effort on an item that you would replace 4-5 levels later.

  • Run some dungeons while levelling. Being in a group offsets the difficulty a little bit. They give you some nice blue items from either bosses or the reward bag you get by completing the dungeon.

  • Tank specializations are very easy to level up and can cope with harder monsters that other specs may struggle with. You can do quests as tank specialization even if you want to play that class as DPS or healer later. Also pet classes (hunter and warlock) are easy since the pets can tank for you.

First, I endorse the site that Punyelf linked. It is the best. It is what I use.

Now. my main tip is: Unless you are making it part of your challenge to be completely self-sufficient, consider using the Auction House to buy some necessary materials for your crafting.

Back in the day when Outland was current content, people would spend two years there. That made for a LOT of time to collect skins, and herbs, and ores.

If you have two years, or even 6 months, to spend on skinning in Outland, I’m sure you could collect all the necessary materials to skill up your leatherworking. Even as it is, you can collect a lot.

But it really is reasonable to fill in what you can’t gather yourself from the AH.

My other tip, in case you don’t know it, is to check wowhead.com for how to get any materials - whether skins or ores or fish - that you want, and ESPECIALLY READ THE COMMENTS!

The comments are the most valuable part of Wowhead. They are not always right, but they are always informative. For example, the upvoted comment

that “Pools of fish have a significantly higher chance of dropping” Enormous Barbed Gill Trout

Thanx all for your tips; I probably just started with the wrong idea. Will get me the dragonflight expansion and another half year and then work backwards on professions if i still feel like that
