Crafting a legendary

Greetings forum !

Recently started wow again, not having played since cata, and im about to craft my first legendary. Help me understand:

Legendary’s have 6lvls?
If i craft with the highest ilvl base item, my legendary will be crafted at rank 6, and will not need further upgrades?
Alternatively i can craft with lower ilvl base item, and upgrade with soul ash/cinders or a vestige of origins for 2 lvls?

Some things are better since cata, some things are worse. I definetly think gearing/currencies/covenants/conduits/soulbinds, etc. is abit of a mess.

the game is a mess, too many systems interacting with eachother.
you can craft it at low lvl and then upgrade it, or straght at high level, but you’ll still need the same overall amount of ash/cinders.
keep in mind the lvl 6 requires more ash cinders than we had time to collect since 9.1 got live.
every new patch they’ll probably add a coule of levels to legendaries ( they were capped at rank 4 initially, now it’s rank 6) so you will still need to upgrade them if you want to have updated legos in the future.
personally I’m not gonna bother, torghast is too boring I’m not gonna upgrade my lego.

You can craft a legendary at any level providing you have sufficient currency. The currency cost will remain the same, whether you start at a low level and build it up or go straight in for the big one.

The higher you can make the first one, the less runecarver base items you will need to fork out for. These are made by crafters (players) in game and sold on the AH.

Rank Item Level Soul Ash Soul Cinders
Rank 1 190 1,250 -
Rank 2 210 2,000 -
Rank 3 225 3,200 -
Rank 4 235 5,150 -
Rank 5 249 5,150 1,100
Rank 6 262 5,150 1,650

Theres 2 currencies at play here, “gold” and “soul ash”

Sure, getting a lower level legendary will get you a shiny item sooner but upgrading it will cost a lot of gold. Just make sure you weigh up all sides.

Indeed, always the same effect no matter which rank you craft but the stats will vary based on the rank, and thus ilvl, of your legendary.

Until next patch which will require to be upgraded

Yes, you’ll need the base item for upgrades but the ash cost will be reduced by what you already spent in your legendary.

If you instantly craft a rank 6 you won’t have to spend gold on lower ilvl base items, but you’ll have to wait multiple weeks for the soul cinders. For what it’s worth i guess a rank 1 is more than enough to test a lego but you should aim for the highest ilvl possible rather than waste too much gold on the base items.

Vestige of Origins is only used as an optional ingredient in the crafting of the base item. So for example if you craft rank 4 base item and use a vestige of origins it will become a rank 6 base item. So you only need it if you are a crafter and craft the base items.

This is very true. A lot of people I know jumped from 1st to 4th tier in 9.0, because the intermediate stages were considered too expensive and 90% of the legendary’s power is the special effect - which doesn’t scale.

If you can jump in with a t6, that’s the most economical - but we’re all waiting on the gating to have enough currency for one

If you want a legendary right now, crafting a lower rank is the way to go. However, the overall cheapest way to go is to straight up craft the legendary at max level using a max level base item. For each upgrade of the legendary you will need a new base item.

Personally, I will craft my new legendary at rank 4 (ilvl235) right now, and then when I can, I will straight up upgrade it to rank 6. This however costs me 80k more gold, because I had to buy an ilvl 235 base as well as the rank 6 one.

The overall cost of making a rank6 in terms of soul cinders/soul ash is the same no matter how you choose to go about crafting it
