Crafting needs overhaul

Let’s set up straight, I think professions are relevant now, you can be useful, but there are many things that are underwhelming, or just bad. I want to discuss.
Another note, I am a blacksmith (BS) so most of the things I will say will be about crafting gear, not crafting consumables.

  1. Crafting benefits non-crafters more.

As a crafter, you spend hours and hours farming stuff, grinding reps, but a dude can just do some mining+herbalism for 1 hour and get his best items and leave for couple of thousands of gold. Honestly, being a BS feels like I’m doing charity. While I am one of the top BS in my server, I made only 300k which is criminally low for 6 months. And I also spent 100k on frostfire belt recipe because the drop chacne of it is 0.1% and 0.2%. For comparison, crafters in my server of Shadowlands did 20 million in their first year with legendaries. I think you should give us some world quests in the city where if we craft rank 5 items, we have progression on these world quests and we get a lot of gold. I know it’s cringe to ask more rewards in forums, but still. The amount of time I have invested in being a top BS and the amount of gold I got is like working for $50 per month. This might be different for other crafters like jewelcrafters, so I am not sure.

  1. Mettle is not a good system. People whisper me and ask for rank 5 guaranteed, but I am so close to 0 mettle now, and when I ask for a justified high price, they just leave the whispers or ask to work on the proc. And for the proc, the price is very low too. I can’t exactly say how to fix this, but it feels like selling mettle instead of making gold on crafting.

  2. The public order system should be removed completely. Seriously, people put orders with their own mats for 10 gold, and other crafters still do them. This just kills the pricing for personal crafting. Make it that crafting is only personal, let them spam LF in the city chat, let them put at least some efforts for the easy 447 they get, come on.

  3. Crafting anchors you to valdrakken. This is one of my least favourite things. To a point that I want to quit crafting. I HATE being anchored in an mmo. You should create a crafting order chat that is available for crafters outside the cities and available for non-crafters only in the cities. And you should let us have toys or items that allow us to set-up crafting stations without 24 hour CDs like you always like to put in every fun toys in this game. Let me be a crafter in Ironforge, heck let me be a crafter in blackrock mountains. Anchoring is boring.

  4. Quests are not well designed for crafting. Go kill 45 mobs to get 10 items and get 3 crafting knowledge points. This is so boring. Instead, you should give us weekly quests for some NPCs in the world. We could travel to other continents, see what items they want crafted, gather the resources, craft and give them, and get knowledge points. There are so many fun possibilities, but the choice fell on, “kill boar a…s and the quest is done.”

  5. There should be 0 RNG for crafting recipes. As BS we need to fight for 1% drop chance hammer from a rare that can be killed and looted once per day, we need to farm Algerthar and Azure Vault for 0.1% and 0.2% drop rate recipes, and still others can roll and take them. We have to raid, and I hate raiding. Just lock all the great recipes behind reputations that can be grinded only by crafting rank 5s. Artisan’s consortium could be that rep grind with purchasable recipes.

  6. No transmog recipes. We could have some fun transmog recipes as well.

Overall it’s good to have crafting as an option for gearing, but it’s very one-sided and has an inconsistent design. In one cases you progress because you put efforts, in many other cases it’s just a slot machine. And your crafting progression is afk for 7 days, and then it’s wednesday, you spend 6 minutes, get your knowledge points and afk in valdrakken. This not fun. Notice that I am mostly complaining about fun, not the amount of gold.

Then you would still have to compete against the people that do it for 10g. Just in the trade chat this time.

If they don’t have an option to choose price for themselves, nothing will cost 10 gold. There will be established prices like in normal markets like happened in SHL. When I first heard about this in Shadowlands, I knew that people are gonna put orders for 1 silver and get their items. It’s just bad for overall pricing and put all our efforts into a garbage bin.

They do. The same crafters will be around in the trade chat. And they will snatch away those buyers while the buyers will ignore you that charges higher prices.

Or overpriced prices. Which people are also fed up with. The prices people charged at the start of DF or Shadowlands were frankly put ridiculous.

Youre still not going to get the gold youre hoping for as you are competing against the people that do it for “free”.

They will have to travel to crafting stations for 10 gold. And nobody places LF ads with price request, it’s always asked from crafters. Even if some people whisper and ask for 10 gold, it will not be publicized and won’t affect general pricing.

Shadowlands situation was a bit different because legendaries were a MUST. Right now people get 447s for 5-10k, so there’s no overpricing if resources are not artificially gated. And many overpricing still exists even with public orders are there. If it’s only with personal order, people will add friends their favourite crafter and just place personal orders with them, like many of my “customers” do. They also invite their friends to add me because I give good prices.

People do crafting mostly for golds, I hope you are aware of that.

Before the order system and after it nothing changed for me. And I mean nothing. Gear can be made by guild/community/friends for free. Before in the trade chat I did the same thing I do now through the order system. So @Kretías is right. You will still compete. The order system is fine as it is. It removes the need to use the trade chat not that I ever used it for gear. As I said I get the gear made for for silver.

They will still ask for a lot less than you would. Thats my point. And yes it would affect general prizing since people will be aware that there are people that do it basically for free.

Legendaries and Embellishments are pretty much the same thing.

Define “good prices”. And youre still going to compete with the crafters that do it for way less whether you want to admit or not.

That doesnt negate what i said.

The crafters that do this are often just trolls themselves. The either just want to tank the market, craft for the achievement or purely do not appreciate the potential they could have in making gold. They also often the same players that just swipe daddy’s credit card for a token if they themselves need in game gold.

My other personal favorite is someone wanting something crafted - you tell them the price and they respond : “you want x for just pushing a button. you insane” To these folks I simply reply that if it is just a push of a button to them then go level the skill up yourself.

I agree with the public order system. It needs either be abolished or you are forced to provide ALL materials that are linked to the current AH costs. This will stop the 1g scammers.

PS: The 1g scammers are all exactly the same players putting in orders on every single profession. There is not enough ignore space to add them all.

Besides rep farm, what really takes time? putting points into the right tree …?

Only exception i can see is ultimate cauldron & lariat due to their prices, but then again they are not mandatory to craft

I run with resourcefulness tool so i do this because i got maxxed resourcefulness aswell, which makes me save the materials and public work orders dont really cost anything to do so i might as well

Agreed, they added portable work stations for engineering and alchemy, but no other profession for some reason, hope they will add more

I like that idea

I like inspiration, even if i feel like the % could be abit higher, maybe 60% at maxxed + minmaxxed tool

Tho this being said dont you think this thread would fit better in the profession section? :o

i think the new crafting system is really good but it needs some tweaks to make it useful, right now it’s useless & crafting require more progress than ever but the whole idea & systme was good . i hope they’ll change it without going back to old version.

Honestly yeah, I can see that, but you have to see it from the other side too. There are people who, like you, enjoy crafting. I do not. Personal preference, but then when I need a crafted item, either for its embellishment or for its easy ilvl, I just want it cheap because I’ve already spent at least 10k on the materials so I really don’t want to spend another 10-20k on a personal crafter. So I just put it in as a public order, and if the public order system disappeared I’d just stop interacting with crafting at all.

It takes too much effort and time to level the profession, as well as not allowing downtime since there is no catch-up, which makes it too expensive to be worth it. Not to mention that if you spend your points wrong that profession on that character is done for.

This line shows the root cause of the problem. The first rule of a working economy is that everything has to be a consumable. Blizz tried to achieve this with legendary ranks and recrafting, but this is too little, too irrelevant, and even so people perceive it as a punishment.
Everyone wants the bis items and if professions are too…profitable, then people scream “P2W reeeeee”.

In the old days they tried to limit the supply through daily/weekly crafted soulbound stuff, but it’s always been artificial and never self-balancing.

But the system won’t exists if it doesn’t benefit crafters. If it’s not beneficial, nobody will farm professions and you will have harder time to find great items crafted.

That’s why I said that crafting benefits non-crafters so much more.

Hmm, not really. No embelish gives you spear of bastion, for example.

I don’t think you understand how pricing works generally. Imagine people can go to a supermarket and decide for themselves how much to pay for products.

It negates a lot of things you say. Because it’s different when the provider chooses the price and when the customer chooses the price. There’s a massive difference.

And the people who craft for free or 10 gold, why would they refuse to take 5k if that’s the standard price? People craft for 10 gold cuz they casually have some profession. A person who can guarantee 447 will never take a craft for 10 gold, cuz we use mettle.

Or just lazy ones who want some side gold, like 200g per day by doing nothing.

Because people only see the public orders and don’t see the efforts good crafters put.

Emm… not missing a login for any week for 7 months. Getting skill from 50 to 100. Fighting for a hammer that has a 1% drop chance with 1 chance per day. Spending hours advertising for items that are first craft. Mining ores for crafting things that nobody wants, but to increase skill and points.

Yeah I meant 0 rng for recipes. Inspiration is fine.

I like the fantasy and the rp of being a crafter, but I’m just afk in the city.

They don’t need to revert the new system. The major tweak required is the public system. It should have emulated an honest type auction system where the buyers dictate what they willing to pay. That system is not working and the value of the item needs intervention where they link it to the actual AH where the true value of the items would lay minus the crafters service fee. If this could get fixed up then it would have potential. Until then it is a garbage system that fueling aggravation and encouraging dishonesty.

Either fix it or abolish it.
