Cultist: Hero Class or Glyph customizations tied to Old Gods lore?

Not sure this has been tipped in before… and it may be a dumb idea after all… but… a new hero class… such as… Occultists ?

Former Cultists still capable to fight the Old Gods, I mean. After all Blizzard already showed us that nothing is impossible… and some people always manage to ‘escape’ their former masters and/or twist powers at their disposal using their free will. We’ve already got Death Knights to fight the Lich King and Demon Hunters tapping into Fel powers to fight the Legion, and aside from shadow priest, who did it ‘a little bit’ with the shadow spec, void elves showed us that the void is a power that can be exploited in different ways… so how about some (oc)cultists managed to twist the powers of the void to their will to fence off the Shath’Yar’s Black Empire, if that is confirmed to be the theme of the next expansion?

In this case, it would be some former Twilight Cultists or worshippers of N’Zoth (hint: some people who refused to let go of their Gift?) or another Old God, and then changed allegiance when they realized (oh, the surprise!) that their true return would not grant them more powers, but rather destroy their world.

I see an occultist having two dps and a healer spec (based on leeching, shifting life from foe to friends).

To those who may say we already have shadow priests, and warlocks, and void elfs… I answer we already had warriors, and paladins, and undead as a race, when Wrath came out with the Death Knights. And we already had warlocks when Legion came out and gave us the Demon Hunters. It’s really all about the lore and the flavor and the combination of bits and pieces. New combinations can still be found, if the theme of the next expansion is fitting.

Oh, I am not saying it would be EASY to balance such a class, in order to make it fit the lore while feeling unique. But impossible? Nah. There’s no limits to imagination. Shadow priests could be given a more distinctive identity same way it was done with Demo-locks before the Demon Hunters were introduced, and the void elves, while an ‘obvious’ choice for a (oc)cultist class, would only be one of the many possibilities.

What I am saying is, we’ve had so much Old Gods lore, and so many speculations about a more in depth look into that lore, that I find it impossible not to long for a proper (oc)cultist class with tentacles, eldritch spells, and candle-lit rituals. Also, a lot of rpg gamers out there appreciate ‘Cthulhu Mythos’ lore… or at least, I certainly know I do, which is why I rolled a void elf spriest alt for the time being.

It could also include a Necromancer spec, which I believe would appeal to many.

And no worries if you find this silly, feel free to go ahead and explain why, I wouldn’t have posted in a forum if I wasn’t ready to know other people’s opinions. I just was wondering if others might like the idea or find it feasible. And you never know, who may be reading the forums and what the future may bring. Dreaming is free of charge, and it’s not like I’d enjoy the game any less if I do not get my wish granted. I’ve been playing since BC, and I cannot imagine quitting.

So… Basically OP SPriests?

Would love to see Necromancers… it’s not like they aren’t already in the game

And even if, why not… after all it would ‘just’ be the same way as Death Knights being OP undead warriors, and Demon Hunters being OP Demonology warlocks, with similar and yet unique flavor? ^^

Thats exactly the problem, I didnt want rogues with shaman spells, I didnt want rogues with metamorphosis and sure as hell I dont want DKs and priests to have babies …

While we are making requests could we please get cloth and mail tanks too? Would be nice to have more options.

Who wield the magic of blood, frost and undeath… That’s like saying shamans and mages are basically the same thing because one of their specs uses fire…

Accept they don’t cast and don’t summon demons. The only similarity is that they interact with demons.

We may have different playstyles and/or desires for the game (which is perfectly fine, everybody is entitled to their own opinion, as we all pay to play) but I did crack into laughter at your comment so kudos to that.

What can I say, I have hated DKs when they came out, as I did not find them feasible and resented them being so OP, but in the years, they grew on me, and I came to accept them around, even if I have never played one further than the intro quest line.

Same (if different) with the pandas, and by the time Demon Hunters came out, I did not mind anything any more, and I doubt I will mind too much anything Blizzard throws at us from now on. It’s just a game after all, so heck, ‘why not’.

Age might be changing me and making me a worse person, I give you that. :stuck_out_tongue:

In fact, I was just teasing there, and I was not at all saying they are exactly that. The opposite really… I meant to point out that someone could have easily dismissed the idea of a DK in the past saying ‘we do not need an OP undead warrior’ and of a DH saying ‘we already have warlocks to tap into demonic powers, we do not need another class like that’, and yet Blizzard managed to make them all feel unique.

What I meant was, rather, that even if I cannot specifically say how right now, I still believe that an occultist could be separated from a shadow priest or a void elf in some way, if Blizzard decided it would fit the storyline to do. The Warlocks were changed to accomodate for Demon Hunters… and just because another class would tap into insanity like shadow priests, it does not mean they would have to be the same.

‘Holy’ is a spec for both paladins and priests, and yet the two classes are pretty different I believe.

We have many mana caster class, and yet the flavor for each of the is unique.

So basically, since there’s no limits to imagination, if Blizzard found it lore-fitting I’m sure they could come up with some solution. E.g. for what I know, they could wear mail, and be a melee class rather than a ranged caster, or have one ranged and one melee spec, and/or introduce a brand new kind of melee healing based on slashing mobs with daggers. I am sure there are people out there who could come up with astonishing brilliant ideas I cannot even begin to imagine. What is more important is, IF Blizzard could find it an interesting concept to develop in connection to the main storyline.

Shortly:

  • If Blizzard thinks they would make sense, I am sure they could come up with something unique and fun.
  • If not, then no reason to waste time on it.

But I think it’s up to them really. We’re just tipping ideas in the big suggestion box over here.

Considering that they had to almost gut demo to make DHs, fun would be questionable.

Dont take that comment too seriously  I am myself owner of multiple DHs and stuff …

I think this is the problem for me, DKs are just warriors with spells, monks are shamans with actually useful totems, demon hunters are just combat rogues …

If they manage to create new class without gutting existing classes, then cmon we still have some 10 W3 heroes to go what are you waiting for …

But in their current state … meh … DH suffers the most, its rogue, with warlocks metamorhposis and released during biggest class pruning period of WoW, meaning you have empty action bars …

i would be very intrested in a sort of traditional necromancer class, löve them in general.

Too close to shadow priest maybe.

They should give some sort of shadow spec to Demon Hunters. Now the Legion is effectively decapitated why not turn their magic lust towards the Void.

Shadow Eye Beam!

Void has an endless hunger.
DH has a gluttony talent.

Void consumes everything.
DH consumes soul shards and magic.

DH is just a more sophisticated, gourmet representative of the Void. Confirmed.

I guess the community answer was truly ‘aarghh, no, thank you, nope, enough class chaos as it is now’.

On the other hand I still can’t help wondering if it the void/cult of the Old Gods could actually rather become an option for an extra (or revamped) warlock spec, now that we have a massive number of Demon Hunters flying around.

Then again… there are already are shadow priests. :purple_heart:
So here’s my hope they get a little revamp themselves, if/when there ever is a Shath’Yar themed expansion.

Oh well. Guess I shall just have to enjoy the purple in the latest raid and see what the next exp is bringing when it finally lands. By the looks of things, however, I might very much like it regardless of class addictions. ^^

And honestly speaking, I had not thought of that before… but a warlock style quest for Paladins and other specific classes to get spells themed for the Old Gods (like the cultist we find in Deepholm) would also totally work for me, rather than a new class.

A… class reskin, ‘simply’?

If we were given ways to customize spell animations to a different flavor, I would gladly grind my way through whatever kind of unlock for that.

Customization is what most of us really want… the allied races already showed to be quite a hit despite of the unpopularity of the unlocking mechanisms.

So here I am hoping that may be the reason they banned users operating third-party software to alter their characters’ appearances… :sunglasses:

Well I for once would totally go for Blizzard to add simple glyphs to change light spells into blood/Old Gods themed ones when in the disc and holy specs, so I could heal on what I like to play as a ‘corrupted’ priest without leaving out the holy spec.

On the other hands however then we should also have glyphs to change shadow spells into light based ones when in the shadow spec, so that people role playing ‘holy’ priests could have a dps for questing without feeling they are breaking their vows. I do know several priests refusing to dps for this reason, and while they may be seen as hardcore role players, I can still relate to the issue.

Especially if there’s an incoming Shath’Yar expansion, I would really like it if Blizzard could give us options to work on the Light versus Void theme.

One way to do this without having to develop or change classes could be to simply add more aesthetic customization options for our toons.

I mean, if we were to assume is time for a new class in the next expansion. And someone came to me with the option to choose between:

Tinker or Spookycaster? Yeah I’d go with the tinker without a second thought. The first one offers a visually powerfull toolkit, maybe even something new. Customize your “gear” aka your mech (something that could be exported to every class in game). Compared to a shadow priest on steroids… Maybe I’m biased due to my general lack of interest on cloth classes but… Can’t see it really.

I realy like the ideas you got especialy that healing spec sound intresting
It sounds realy good tapping the life force of a boss and giving it to a player that sounds amazing.
If that gets added i know what i am gonna be lvling

Wouldn’t mind a new class nearing around necromancer. Its going to take alot of innovation to go and stretch for anything past that given shadow priest & warlock is a thing.

Ideally a new mail class would be cool.

Draining blood/life like that, to leech it into allies, would be very dark looking, I realize that…

But then again if the DKs and locks can raise their minions and do their stuff, I am sure there could be ‘reasons’ why a character could learn these skills and yet choose to apply them ‘for good’.

I think it would fit especially a Troll priest, I bet there are many people out there who wish they could have a blood troll!
