Curious - why do my night elves look much better in game than on log-in screen?

I suspect it’s the lighting angle used primarily …but i notice much better definition and apperance when i logon and am in well lit areas like a capital city or Teldrassil than when I am in any other place.

I don’t have this problem with any other race, not even the nightborne that uses the same model (albeit a thinner version)… why is this? anyone know why? Anyone even noticed?

You may like login screen more, but can you at least notice it looks different?

Hmmm… lighting is weird, for e.g. it’s so much better in Stormwind than it is in Ironforge -… why? just go look at your character’s in both.

Probably because of lighting.

The Night Elf login background of Teldrassil (?) is dark.

Not sure. I always look good.

Night elves always ugly.
Just disable your monitor, that’s the proper way to look at them.

That’s what I’m thinking, thing is they made the characters also dark, they should light the character up, and myabe have the background the same.

I think the change happened when they darkened Kalimdor nights.

you have to account for the fact if you are using the RTX option… those areas were designed years before RTX existed… so while stormwind is open to the elements ironforge is very closed and limited light sources…

stormwind will always have better lighting with rtx on.

unless ironforge gets redesigned with it in mind.

that will explain the worse lighting in the ironforge…

I’ve noticed that poor lighting look noticeable in ironforge in other areas… not quite noticed it in any shadowlands area though, even in doors.

But character login seems to only affect night elf toons… character creation is fine, so it’s as if they haven’t corrected the issue there.

What you say may explain the look in some of the holder zones… but I’m not sure if it is exclusively locked to some older areas with different lighting.

I’m using an older Nvidia card though… but I’ve noticed this on on older cards in earlier years.

shadowlands was the first and to my knowledge only expansion actually designed with RTX in mind… so it will have less areas in theory where there is bad use of lighting.

idk as a straight man i find night elf males to be the ugliest male elf out of all the races, whether it be on log-in screen or not (so i don’t think it’s the lighting). But the females though mmm nomnomnom

it’s a combo - Nightborne were pretty bad, but got better face… NElf male faces are still pretty rough for ellven faces…

but also the expression isn’t great - notice how they look much better either in the character creation calss selection wher eyou can actually see their face expressions change while they are doing spells or actions, something you can’t see on your character.

The set expression is very dour and doesn’t show off the model well, and you can’t see it when the expression is changing because no camera option allows you to see your face live - which would have been good if the character pane portrait had a live 3D version… but that’sanother story…

And to that the rather goofy-ish stand - t just doesn’t look that attractive whereas if they simply had him stand straight, and had some younger faces like they added ofr Nightborne, it might be different.
