In PvE the best performing spec is Survival Sentinel, as far as I know, both raid and m+. BM is visibly weaker, but more mobile and thus easier to play. MM is unviable.
As for PvP, frankly you’d better pick some other class. I haven’t played much pvp this season, but from what I understand none of the hunter specs is viable in PvP. MM hunter used to be good before 11.0.5, when they murdered us.

i was focusing my build around MM but now i have to work on survival stats and items bcz there is clearly differences between playing survival and mm, as survival hunter you always have something to press and apply a buff or debuff/dot skill or an attack or something as mm there are times when i have to press something and i either have to wait for resources to go up a lil bit or spells are in CD after initial burst and i sit there waiting for spells to press… i think i will stick with survival spec this expansion and let the MM for the future to come… even if i just unlocked my long awaited Sylvsnas tmog… the gameplay is more important for me and survival shall i play

In PvE yes, in PvP no. Also depends a lot on what kind of PvP you do. In arena it is BM and in battlegrounds it doesn’t matter so much as long as you can support achieving objectives. Healers make more of a difference there anyway.

BM/DR for the arena, although SV/Sentinel is not that bad either.
MM is by far the worst at everything and actually one of the worst specs in the game, and there’s no sign of that changing anytime soon.
