In Richard Knaak's 'The War of the Ancients' Malfurion uses druidic powers to fight the Burning Legion. However, when he does it for the first time he drains too much lifeforce from his surroundings, killing a circle of grass around his feet.
Which got me thinking, are Death Knights reversed druids? In Chronicle Vol. 1 Death magic is the opposite of Life magic, but the effects are very similar. What if Death Knights use the lifeforce of their enemies instead of the surroundings? (Especially Blood) Death Knights can drain health from enemies and use it to restore their own health.
Can Druids become Death Knights if they explore this path without having to be resurrected by the Lich King?
No, DKs use blood and shadowfrost magic to steal lifeforce which are different from what druids use.
closest reverse we are is from paladins
Death knights i recall was specifically created to counter Paladins (be the opposite).
Saronite infused armor to absorb spells. Command and raise undead to overwhelm their opponent and damage their moral by having their own comrades fight them. Runes to empower their armor and weapons. Desecrate grounds to weaken the paladins connection to the light. List goes on.
DK was created because Guldan wanted to counter mages by creating undead, magic resistant unstoppable soldiers. First DK... Gorefiend... First Generation.
Lich King DK is just a upgraded copy that were created mostly from Paladins because they were strong in life and because its a funny irony to make those priests in plates murder civilians.

Those are first and second generation. We are the third generation.
There is no third generation... Unless Bolvar will invent a new ones using fire and stuff. Rivendare is as much second generation as I am. Both using runeblades, both being undead warriors.
Also DK is DK and there are no generations in lore anyway.
They could be a new spec any day.

Wrong. Second gen were fallen paladins which wielded cursed runeblades that were bound to their souls and who willingly joined the LK in exchange for unholy power and undeath.
Third gen, aka us are DKs Arthas created in the starting zone as a perfected version of the second gen. We are not bound to our runeblade and can change to another, we can forge runes on our runeblades and we possess eternal hunger which forces us to inflict pain and death in order to stay sane.
So yes, there is a so-called third generation* and no, Rivendare is not like you. He's bound to his blade, doesn't have eternal hunger and is less versatile and is powerless without his runeblade.
Also, Second gen were made by Ner'zhul while the third gen were made by Arthas. Another difference.
*You are right however that there are lore-wise no generations of dks. It's just a term people use to better differentiate between different types of DKs created at a different time and under different circumstances.
the second gen are paladins and warriors that were turned into deathknights "willingly" by the nerzhul lich king (arthas, four horsemen, rivendare)
the playable DK are the ones created by Arthas after he becames the LK and are refered as 3rd gen DKs
the "first gen" DKs (gorefiend, WC2), werent DKs as we know it, but just guldans shadow council souls put into fallen alliance warriors, they had the same name but diferent origins
