Hello I’m not sure if this is the right category to post but hopefully I could find some answers to enlighten me. I started playing last May 2020 with my EU account ( Draenor ) since I think this would be the closest to where I’m currently based at, which is in Doha Qatar ( middle eastern country close to Dubai ) . I’m having a constant latency of 111-119 ms and sometimes experience some lag spikes during raids or mythic plus. Now I have some group of friends I want to play with but they’re on Oceanic Servers. I tried to create a character there just to test out how it goes, I’m having 330 ms latency and when I’m using VPN ( exit lag) it drops down to 180-190 ms. This is only in the starting zones though and I don’t know how it goes when I hit level cap and start doing mythic plus and raids. I hope someone would be able to give their insight or similar experience on what should I do, should I stick to my current EU account or transfer to my US account? Any advices would be appreciated! Thanks for reading
Play where you want. You lag will get worse when raiding.
Hey thanks for the time to reply. Yes this is what I’m thinking too, I would love to join my friends but do you think with the 190ms latency ( with exitlag vpn) I could still enjoy the game like pushing keys etc?
By the way what’s your normal latency?
Mine is 22/24 to EU realms and 100/110 to US ones, I’m in the UK. I haven’t checked the US one recently.
Also VPNs have in the past gotten people banned.
Geez I wonder how smooth the gameplay with your latency
Yeah I saw some older post regarding players getting banned with VPN, but my friends who are on Oceanic are all playing with VPN though and they’re like playing since Legion
Depends what time of day you play without your friends around.
If you’re typically on these times of day then EU is so much better.
I don’t really see why you would be banned for playing on a VPN but hey, apparently it happens.
190 MS doesn’t seem worth it to me though.
Hmmm that’s a Good Point
But do you think there’s a significant difference between where my current latency ( 111-119 ms) in comparison to playing with 190ms?
I am playing with 300 ms and pushing at least semi high keys. Certain classes are unplayable (rogues (with adrenaline rush) and fire mages usually, due to proc delay)
It is ok to play, but sometime in dungeons it spikes to 400 which then is unplayable.
So generally it seems the breakpoint is about 320 ms where it becomes unbearable.
PTR is US server and it is much smoother for me with 180 ms ping but unfortunately US and EU accounts are not linked and I cannot transfer a char over there so I don’t bother.
But I am in China so I guess for you US and EU is about the same latency. If you connect with oceanic you might see you ping explode though
Of course when I go home to Germany and play with 9ms ping the difference is night and day, especially in pvp.
Biggest problem is that with 300ms it is impossible to fake cast. I stop my cast, it is stopped on my screen but then I still get locked out by a kick xD
Seems not the case anymore but mostly you cannot even log in anymore with a vpn active. It instant disconnects in the client when I try with a vpn and blizz support doesn’t care anyways.
EU account holder living in the US.
Best latency ratings. 100 to 110 home, 100 to 110 world.
I would hazard a guess it would be roughly the same in your situation.
personally, I moved to a different country, so now i’m playin in Eu servers with 320 ping. It’s annoying and makes you weaker in pvp, but overall doable.
IF you really want to play with your friends, go for it. You’ll be fine once you get used to the high ping.
i play from South Africa and since the beginning had 180ms ping, it really isnt that bad though.
Tried wtfast? Or other softwsre like it. That streamlines connections for quicker routes. I’ve got a friend in Australia that it works wonders for, was getting 400ms minimum and it’s below 200 now. On the other hand I’ve tried it with US servers (I’m UK) and it didn’t do much.
I wouldn’t trust any of those services that purport to lower your ping.
I see, so basically I would still be able to enjoy the game in both EU and US servers. HIgh latency would just greatly affect anyone who’s more on to PVP.
you can if that high ping you have is stable. if you got high spikes i get disconnects and is generally not enjoyable.
if it stays on 300ms i can enjoy the game although you have to adapt with interupts and need to react faster than everybody else to ground effects.
when you see them you lost already 0.3s so thats actually a big deal but pve is still fine as most effects take 2s or sth to dodge
In games like wow a latency of around 250 ms is acceptable .anything above that will hurt you badly .
I have played on both wow usa and wow EU .i am in Pakistan .
I have 148 ms to eu and 230 ms to na .playing on oceanic servers from middle east is not recommended because of latency .
For me I still prefer eu because latency is less and it gives me some extra window to respond to situations .
Also making new friends in wow is not that hard .
What is WoW without your friends anyways?
Play where your friends play
