Did I just Lost Crests Upgrading 1H Weapon and Shield instead of a 2H Weapon?

Correct, but appropriate includes some things you might not consider.

Holy paladins and Resto Druids can use 2h healing maces, such as the one from Stonevault.

Ele and resto shamans can use staves, even if they can and do prefer to use 1h + shield.

WW Monks can use 2h weapons, even if 1h is generally better.

Caster shamans and druids can use the fist weapon from Grim Batol.

If my main has a 610 head slot item equipped and my alt has a 594 item equipped in that slot, my alt will get a valor stones discount to upgrade that slot, but will pay the normal crest cost. After my alt gets the slot to 610, there is no further discount, but point 1 will apply if my alt changes head slot item to something of a lower iLvl.

Slight adendum to this. As of this week any upgrade you are making on an alt that has lower ilvl than your main will cost 30% less Valorstones AND 30% less crests. However your main needs to not only have a higher ilvl on that slot, but have high enough ilvl on that slot for the crest type to no longer be usable.

Example: Upon reaching 606 ilvl in all slots, a character earns the achievemet https://www.wowhead.com/achievement=40115/harbinger-of-the-carved.

All upgrades up to 606 on all other characters now cost 30% less crests.
