Second names is pretty much the only feature of Forever that I really hate.
Blizz, please let us disable the visibility of second names completely in the following areas:
- Names rendered above player’s head
- Chat
- Party frames
Make it like in retail where if you click on a player’s name in the chat window and whisper them, their fully qualified name gets shown. Retail already has the concept of fully qualified names with server name suffixes, e.g. Benico-ArgentDawn. You could also display the full name in mouse-over tooltips - I’d be fine with that. I just don’t want to see them all over the place.
Update: I’m only asking for the option to hide it. I’m also aware that there’s already an option to hide it, but that only affects my local client.

Im okay with seeing other players names.
But if i hide 1 of them its because i dont use it daily. So i dont tell it to people. The goverment and such may know it. And there are places where its needed. But still.
So what name you see should be choosen by the player whoms name you look at. But easy to toggle

Yeah, having an option that allows you to visually hide your second name from other players would also be nice. (Of course, it would technically still be there, similar to how the server name suffixes exist in retail, but it wouldn’t be shown all the time.)

Id trade servers for a secend name, i prefer how they did it in forever, without secend name all names would be taken rly fast and you would be stuck with diablo inspired name xxxxBenicoxxxx

You can chose to not display your own secondary name. The ones from other players you can only hide the whole thing or not. So you are forced to see both primary and secondary names of other players in the viewport.
Fairly sure an addon will be available if Blizzard doesn’t do this. But currently there is only an option to hide your own secondary name, not those of other players.
I LOVE that we’re getting second names! It’s something the player base has been asking for FOR YEARS!

Its nice for players who like it but I am not a fan of it. I dont hate it but at least in GW it is an option and I thought it would be same in Forever lol..

okay i found where to “disable” the surname. for what it matters. chat still uses both names - honestly if a player chooses to disable the surname. the entire game should respect that. at the same time, we should be able to disable the first name instead aswell.
i get the system needs both. thats fine. but that does not mean we have to see both
i’ve had coworkers where we never knew or needed the surname of each other. just firstname or a nickname.
at the same time in the army its either surname or callsign (basicly a nickname)
i dont go around introducing myself with full name when meeting new people. it might just be a danish / scandinavian thing. but 99% of the time firstname is good enough. its only when doing “official” stuff with the goverment and / or the bank etc that both are needed. and even then its not needed for talking. but needed for the records

Agreed! Don’t touch it. It gives more flexability.
I just discovered this feature through this thread and wth this is great
Does this mean multiple people with the same first name if they have a unique second name or is that too much?
mostly, yes. Some other in Europe handle it like that, too. Here in Germany it’s Last Name primarly, unless you get the okay by someone to use her/his first name at work - might be different within workplace cultures, age structures and whatever.
Can’t understand that anyone has problems with seeing full names in the game, when people would probably enter the barricades if in Games of Throne Jon Snow would always had been adressed as Jon

where is the flexibility if we’re forced to use it ? there is none. giving doesnt require taking away.

Where was the flexibility in Classic for me to use second names? There wasn’t!
Flexibility is getting creative and in be in core with your main character. They’ll probably make an addon for you lot to filter out second names.

I make puns and jokes with my character’s names, all of which would not work in a dual name environment. I get it it’s nice to give the option for those who care, but give the option to toggle it off for those who do not care. For all i’m concerned, I’m fine putting " ozehoizjoj " as a second name to unlock the character if I’d be able to toggle it off ( for me and others ) when in game.
As I said, you can not say it gives flexiblity when the name system is as rigid as the old one. It just changed the rules.

i dont really have a problem with seeing other use both names. but i would like the option to choose what name to show for myself (not seeing others but what i show others) and that things such as chat respecs it. even if behind the scenes it does not.
take a RP scenario of a criminal trying to hide. by not telling his last name, he might have a higher chance of getting away in the crowds
so its kinda like tmog for my. having the option is fine. as long as i can choose what i show, or the other way around as the case may be. what im being shown

Don’t get me wrong. I think it’s a cool feature and I understand why it’s technically necessary. But I want the option to hide my second name because my WoW chars always only identified with a single name.
Yes, you could have “Sylvare A” and “Sylvare B” standing right next to each other in Forever (not sure if there’s a minimum first/second name length, but you get the point). Uniqueness is now determined by first and second name.
That option currently only affects what is shown on your own client. Other players will still see your second name everywhere (nameplates, chat, mouse-over text, party frames, etc.) and that’s what I’d like to (optionally) change.
We basically already have second names in retail but they are not displayed: the server name suffixes. This char’s name is technically Benico-ArgentDawn, but that “second name” is only displayed to other players when they whisper or mouse-over me. I wish we could choose to have something similar for our characters in Forever.

I think for that, we ALWAYS needed an addon hiding the full Nameplate. At least for the really, really hardcore RPers (not me) who weren’t able to mentally make nameplate invisible.
But I understand Your position and I also hope that I get the chance to make it so that I do not see each and every “second name”, but only because of my fear with what kind of alphabetical garbage so many people would come up with.
how would that work if 20 can be called Jeff A, B, C…
you get a full 20man raid with 20x Jeff?
hey jeff? not you the hunter, the undead hunter, no mate the undead hunter with a green cloak and a pet dog..
