Disc priest healing

I have noticed disc priest preforms overall better than holy priest in mythic+, yet i don’t understand where they are getting these heals from.

I have played Holy priest for the majority of BfA and tried Discipline out several times but allways end up dropping it because i feel like holy does the job better in almost any situation.

I understand how the spec works with the attonements, damage being converted to healing and that it is a spec with a very rough learning curve and has a hard time with groups that dont preform as well with mechanics.

Everytime i try it i have a very hard time keeping tanks up and running even trough regular trash packs.

If anybody could shed some light on this it would be very appreciated.

You kinda said it yourself. “has a hard time with groups that dont preform as well with mechanics.”

Disc priest is bad at fixing mistakes. You need to have some extra knowledge about specific trash packs/bosses to prevent the damage upfront instead of having to play the catch up game.

One boss that comes to my mind is cragmaw in underrot you have to watch the timers for tantrum carefully there. I.e on the first one you can rapture preshield everyone -> schism + pump dmg, 2nd pre-shield -> fiend -> radiance -> schism + dmg.

On big trash pulls I sometimes put pain suppression on the tank right at the start and dot everything

I’d suggest to check out the wowhead priest mythic+ Bible made my automaticjak. He goes over each dungeons and gives some suggestions on specific trash/bosses

Discipline tank healing in general is fairly horrendous and can mostly function only with a warrior’s insane mitigation or a VERY good DH or paladin.

If a tank hasnt adapted to the modern game of being mostly self sutainable and rotating cooldowns constantly, the specc can’t keep them up.

It’s also good to learn when to use pain suppression on some tank types. For example, a blood DK has a horrible start and needs the mitigation as soon as he pulls until he gets his runic power going. In the other end of the spectrum a DH has an insane start and then falls into a low mitigation downtime and thus need it later instead.

Other than that, thats the fun and also the frustraring part of discipline. The entire game is a learning curve that you plan ahead of, with very little reactive gameplay.

Forgive me if this is something you already do… but if you’ve mained holy, i’d imagine you spend most encounters with your tank as your target.

You need to learn to drop that. Speed is everything. Switching between your tank and his target is wasting damage and therfor healing.

You need macros that will either heal your tank, whilst you still target the enemy; or macros that will attack “the target of your target”… or ideally both.

This helps you stay ahead of the incoming damage and then you have a big shadow mend (from depths of shadow, azerite trait) for back up.

The rest is knowing mechanics. There isn’t much flexibility with disc. Your talents won’t change your gameplay, just slight … and i mean slight, differences to your rotations.

Get ya dot up, get your attonements out and nuke.

Disc priest requires the group to do a lot of damage mitigation, For example I was in AD 10 and the casters on Fortified were hitting for 90k when combined with the green spit everywhere also ticking for 30k and random people taking ticks of Sanguine (Because theres always some melee who can,t move fast enough) and combined with Quaking. , All of this damage is unhealable as Disc because we can not heal reactively, We have no way to fix group mistakes.

I feel an AoE shield spell much like Luminous Barrier would make things a lot easier for Disc,s and a better AoE heal than Radiance.

Also a slight buff to the Atonement healing throughput would be nice or a reduction to the cast time of Smite to allow us to get more throughput from it would be nice after all if theres no mobs and quaking happens we have no choice but to hit Radiance and then shadow mend to re-heal as groups are not going to wait inbetween trash packs for healing.

Just a suggestion a spell which could be preceeded by a cast of Radiance.

Greater Radiance - Heals all players affected by Atonement for (X amount of Mastery) of the priests current HP.
