DK or DH for tanking?

Hi there. i need a little help in deciding what to level, DK or DH for tanking. i am not interested in dpsing as i find melee dpsing boring but i enjoy tanking from time to time. i also want to clarify that i’m not trying to choose the class based on its performance, i don’t raid and i only do mythics sometimes, nothing much higer than 15+. i like to play what i find fun.

my problem lies in that i’m very indecisive and i like both classes, they both have their differences and i can’t make my mind. i find both of them fun, DK sightly a bit more dynamic because DH is mostly spamming the same 2 buttons over and over (DK too, but at least i got 3 buttons lol), but it lacks area damage the DK has (love blood&decay). i also dislike DK’s low mobility and i like jumping around and flying on a DH, plus their animations are cool. i don’t want to level & gear both because my silly adhd brain would get overwhelmed so i have to choose.

which one do you guys find more fun/rewarding and why? maybe if i hear other’s experiences i can make a decision.

Ask yourself, you want to be badass knight of undeath? Or egdy teenage with horns that everyone hates?

Blood DK.
Lore, spells and synergy are interesting in my opinion.

They’ve really good survivability and decent utility.
I think the things I listed above somewhat compensated their lack of mobility (although I’d like to have more mobility).

Probably DK.

BDK seems like the better option IMO.

I like the DK much more because of the playstyle. You have a few extremely powerful ways to heal yourself like no other tank does and it gives you the opportunity to save the day if your healer dies. On the other tank specs I just feel like a huge punching bag.

The lack of mobility is sometimes disturbing but not a problem because while you are slower than other tanks, you have a much stronger control on how to place the mobs instead. You can kite on a DK as good as you can on a monk or a DH just by slowing them.

While DK is not the most effective tank (and won’t be in 8.3 either. It’s just a bunch of clueless streamers exaggerating) but it’s by far the most fun and engaging tank.

aw, i like being badass but i also like the edgy horns…

Fixed for you.

yeah their self healing is really strong and it’s one of the reasons i like them too, though my buddy manages to survive pretty well by himself with his DH whenever we lose the healer (and most of the time we can pull it off).

you made a really good point on mobility vs control. i was a bit worried about this since if i want to play mythic i’ll have to kite sometimes, but then again blood&decay slows for 90%…

It’s not just death and decay. Heart Strike slows, too. Then you have the grip (two charges with conflict and strife) and mass grip.

And it’s not just grip control. Death’s Advance makes you immune to forced movement effects, which is neat on the first boss in KR for example.
Furthermore, Anti Magic Shell gives you the opportunity to fully ignore some mechanics of some bosses on a relatively short cool down.

I feel the most in control on the DK overall

Death knight because you can wield swords bigger than you*

*- size differs depending of race.

Not to mention the maces

AMS and Death’s Advance let me skip mechanics on most of the bosses in BoD, they’re great abilities

death’s advance is just so … awesome… I would bite Blizzy from … anywhere if they’d even consider removal of it.

Make no mistake they are both uber dark edgy teenagers. There is only one badass tank.

Double jump and glide are so good.
You can literally skip massive sections of areas with it. Its a huge time saver.

Well it depends.

If you want to be ultra competitive, go DK. They are getting a sweet weapon in 8.3 and most think they will rise as a tank in that patch, vengeance DH on the other hand will probably stay on the bottom tier.

That being said tanks are pretty well balanced all things considered, you can easily push high mythic keys with a vengeance dh for example or raid, the difference isn’t all that big unless you want to do challenging content asap you will slowly get gear that will ease différences.

You also seem to have a rather skewed vision of vengeance, this isn’t havoc they are more than “2 buttons” (Havoc being actually 4 to 6 depending on the builds).

Metamorphosis (both) animations make me puke~ there is so much wrong with entire concept of DH. Class feels like its in beta phase (maybe alpha).

Simple flavour things are even annoying like glide in wisp form and tanking metamorphosis

Do yourself a favour and play as Vampire Knight

i don’t really mind being competitive, i know i’ll be able to do content with both classes so i’m not worried about that, but the weapon sounds sweet.

well, i haven’t played havoc as i’m not interested in melee dps, but so far tanking has been spamming pain generator and consuming said pain with either healing or the bomb, occasionally using the spikes and cds as needed. maybe i’m doing something wrong since it’s my first DH but it seemed to me that i have a bit more to play with with the DKs kit.

Just to add, in Mythic EP my co tank was a DH, and him tanking M+ the same. definitely material to clear Mythic raid and do M20. has bundle of more weaknesses compared to more stable monk tank (in both raid and mythic keys), but still tanks are good enough that they all stand their ground.

… and as tank player I love that - even bottom tier vs highest tier - the difference between the two is marginal.
