Do I mention my hobbies to my Department boss?

So I know my boss(department) plays wow, she’s told me that after I walked into her talking about it to someone from IT in the breakroom. Now I’ve recently switched to her(boss) department.

For context I’m an apprentice in germany, where being an apprentice is common, and atleast in my company all apprentices switch departments every few months to have visited them all.

Now I’m a decent worker I’ll say, because calling myself good sounds dumb and I’m definitely not the work person here. But I do like to take free on days when wow releases big content (expansions, major patches, etc.) and now that she knows that I play WoW, I’m unsure if she won’t notice me taking free days on specifically these days.

So i thought it’s a silly subject and wondered if any of you have or had a similar experience, and if so what happened, simply out of curiosity?

Good worker and calling in sick for a release day don’t really compute. It reminds me of a clip in a film where a worker in a store steals a bar of chocolate and rationalizes it with “The establishment owes me”. I’m not here to judge “pulling sickies” - all I will say is that be careful, it can harm your reputation if you get known as “that guy”.

Taking a days leave for a hobby is perfectly reasonable though.

And if she is a big wow player its not going to take more than 2 patch days for her to catch on. Humans are machines at recognising patterns.

Book it off for a holiday, it’s not like you won’t have plenty of advance notice of the days off you’ll need.

There really is no need to call in sick.

Plus if you change departments every few months, you probably won’t even be in her department when TWW launches in a years time anyway.

If you buy the epic edition and get the 3 days early access you will also get to play over the weekend before official launch too.

Are you really asking for life advice on a forum full of people who have had a hard time speaking to women in real life?

Jokes aside, just do whatever you feel is right. You need to make these decisions yourself and you can’t always rely on the advice from others to give you an answer to a question, especially if it’s a work related situation, as we all work in different environments/companies, where everyone is different in terms of age, culture and what hobbies they may enjoy.

Not asking for advice, just looking for discusions, I’m just looking to read some funny experiences

Yeah I plan to do that anyway, saidthe sicck thing only because I was unironically sick on the day of ED and that was still in my memory

Yeah that’s fair, but I suppose I consider a good worker more of a knowledge and performance thing than a attendance thing but ofc one can’t be without the other.

I do not discuss gaming at work on the whole. Gaming is mostly perceived by non gamers as something undesirable but it’s probably a judgement call.

If I ask for time off I also don’t justify it with a reason, it’s none of their business. I don’t think I’d call in sick though

Well, here is a bit of life advice… no matter where you work and what hobbies your bosses may have, they can not question as to why you want to take a day off, especially if you’re entitled to that day off.

It’s illegal for them to ask that information.

If you take a “sick” day off, then that’s your decision, but I’m not sure if you need to visit a doctor to get a doctor’s note to confirmation your sickness to make sure, you at least get paid (in part) for that day you took off.

From my experience with work, I’d never take sick days off to play games, it would be pointless, as I’d rather get the money for the work I was doing. If a release was scheduled during a long weekend/bank holidays etc, then I’d take a paid vacation to extend that timeframe.

But as mentioned, your employer can not ask the reason as to why you’re taking a paid day off.

I had a similar interaction during an application for a job. Got asked what kind of games I play as a Hobby. The Job Interviewer clearly listened up when I said “World of Warcraft” among a few others and immediately asked “Classic or Retail”. I ofc, said “Retail” (because I can’t stand Classic slow gameplay/graphics) and the Interviewer went like :slightly_frowning_face:

Did you take the job though?

I didn’t make it in the application process. Wish I would have gotten it. Because then I would already have 1,5y of working experience in my field while staying at my home region.

That’s rough, hope things worked out atleast alright in the end

Not really. I am working a part-time job at my local bakery atm. Planning on applying for a 3D internship later on or my actual profession as a Media Designer. Hence I work on my 3D Portfolio at the moment in my freetime (next to playing games ofc).

So yeah, I don’t think I will work full-time again before May 2024

Got a couple of co-workers that does it every expansion/big patch.
It’s super obvious and even non-wow players at the company figure it out.
Fun to tease them for it ^^

To call in sick when you are not is inherently immoral, it means you are faking an illness to get monetary gains which is taken out of a jar meant for people who struggle with an illness which you are just faking. Better to just take up your free days.

Besides, even if you don’t tell her, she will just figure it out if you keep calling in sick on a wow release date

Not just that, depending on Job you also screw other Co-Workers over, because they have to fill your shift for that day, potentially while they are actually having day offs.

fair point

Yeah this is the main reason I don’t

Unless you’re all home “sick” playing war within.

He’s out of line but he’s right

Other workers can’t suffer if there aint no other worker there

OP, you should really delete this post, and if you value your career don’t ever call in sick unless you’re actually sick.
