It can feel so imprsonal… like the story doesn’t recognise you… it sometimes calls your calss or your race, but it’s just a mention, they play no role .
How many times have I done a quest or seen something and thought… hang on, I’m an orc, I really should be saying something omrehere, or i’m a lock, I should have a deeper view.
But I seem to just pretend like I’m some noob, that really has no race, gender or class, and once in a while , in a faction quest, it at least feels like I’m a horde member… but tha’ts it.
surely is it that hard to sometimes alter what is been said to reflect race, class or gender? Is it that hard for my character to have lines that are also flavoured by their race, class or gender? Why has this never been done? It makes the experience , especially after a while, feel… even more fake than it already does.
it’s like we are suppose to have immersion, but simple things that can be done to avoid ruining it are just left there. GRrrrrr
There used to be a lot of Class quests… they got pruned… which is a big shame. The only time race plays a part is in some starting zones, then that’s it… you are just an adventurer like any other. I agree… it’s bland and lazy.
I loved doing the quests for each shapeshift on my Druid, each totem on my Shaman, each demon on my Warlock etc… I felt that I earned these abilities that showed my power had increased and I had earned it…
Last time we had that was during Legion with the Order Halls - and it was great.
It’s mainly because of the current silly story focus that has the player as “the one hero”; if they’d just tailor the story around a group of heroes (or better: common adventurers) they could do so much more to recognize the individual characters played… but that would of course also require some dedication to racial / class details and it sometimes feels as if the devs don’t want to do that anymore (like the story quest in Maldraxxus, where DHs couldn’t even find the spies just by using Spectral Vision etc.).
Belongs to the same “story” as the “back to Azeroth” theme: I think the game would be much more healthy if it would fokus more on good old Azeroth with its deep lore and the races / classes there.
I don’t think our characters are here to represent the race they are - I think that’s more akin to the lore characters that we’ve got.
Now, if we were to have a racial focus, where we would spend time in our races’ capital cities and work with the racial leaders and known NPCs (obviously, they are still Horde/Alliance), then I think we could be onto something that brings back to the RPG element, that also ties to the lore.
Now it’s clear not everyone will get representation - race/classes like Blood Elf Warlock, Night Elf Death Knight, Orc Mage, Draenei Warrior - are just not popular, within the racial cultures now. Some were, like blood elf warlock, but others have never been, like night elf death knight and orc mage. So, race/class story is off the table.
But racial story and taking pride in the races that we play - that can happen and should be something that Blizzard looks into. This does mean that you could play a night elf druid and you do quests around restoring Eldre’Thalas for the highborne or you play a blood elf mage and do quests in dissolving a rising Amani threat that is being tackled by the Farstriders.
We could use a bit more personal quests, things like choosing what you wish to say are one of my favorites.
Say, there were Speech checks in Fallout 3.
You could have a mocking option that causes you to fight the opponent, but you could have an option to convince them with X% chance, or do them a favor so they would do your bidding in return.
Open-ended quests where you have the choice how to deal with an impasse are really fun, I think.
CLass quests, race quests, those would help reforge the connection and identity of my character for being more than just a random adventuerr that could be anyone.
But don’t you think if quest dialgoue also had flavour that showed how your race and your class (whenever relevant) would react to a situation, then it should be?
You’re definitley going to have something more to say when you come across certain class or race related events or quests… you just can’t simply ignore them as if you’re some random pleb that had no connection… is it very hard to sometimes insert extra material or or say different things garner different reactions becuase you are a specific race or class?
Admittedly not everyone would alwys have something, but there are certain moments when you think… definitely, if your character were a forsaken or say a Death knight, he would definitely be reacting differently (obviously I don’t mean class quests as those are already specific).
you are right about some of the less famous or iconic ones, but then there would be very few quests that warrant a special dialgoue for being both ORC and MAGE - outside an orc mage quest chain, however far more quests in general warrant a different reaction if you’re an orc, or if you’re a mage, and either would often apply to an orc mage.
Someone well grounded in the lore would have to look at each quest and just thik which ones would really wararant a different response for race x or class y, and there will be certain situation that while a mage would have a different response, certain races of mage class would warrant more.
Things like that ddo tend to make it feel so much more personalised and meaningful, and it’s just text.
Do you think it’s an impossible task to do… it’s not like you have to do voice responses… there are game titles out there who voiced every option and altered it to match class and gender even. VOICED, with multiple options… we certainly don’t have conversation option in warcraft, and very few voiced quests, so ti’s just a matter of altering text.
That’s the good bit too… it makes me feel appreciated…hmm…wrong word, recognised in my own adventure for being what my race and/or my class rather than well this could be anyone of any race or any class doing this judging by the interactions.
i do read all of them. You defintiely notice this after a little while.
