Do Trolls read Books?

Hello Lore Experts!

I noticed that there are very few libraries in faction cities, as far as I’ve seen only Stormwind has one, and some neutral cities haven them. However there are obviously religious and magic books. Are there any other kinds of literature in the Warcraft universe? What races even care about such things?
Would Horde races such as Orcs or Trolls even care about books?
I noticed that Paladins always use a Book to cast certain spells. Is this just a gameplay/story-disconnect or do Zandalari and Tauren really have holy books?

Zandalari Trolls and Tauren are implied through in-game aesthetics to be more “civilized”, so to speak. While Darkspear Trolls, and any other trolls in-game for that matter, tends to have the primitive tribe aesthetic going on.

That being said there are probably quests where you can find notes and scrolls and books on nearly every intelligent creature in the WoW universe.

Blizzard just hasn’t ever cared to develop the finer details of each races cultures more in-depth. It would be nice if we could get a book like Chronicles, but focused purely on details surrounding culture. How does the average night elf spend a lazy sunday morning? What does taurens think of cows? How do undead handle the smell of rotting corpses?

Food culture? Entertainment? Fashion? Architecture?

I’m pretty sure trolls can’t read at all!

Trolls do not read Thalassian, which is the only language that matters and thus they are irredeemably barbaric!

Myes, quite…

They are too stupid to read books and to remember anything they have read form it that’s for sure with your exceptional individual as always.

I absolutely agree with that. It’s for this reason why I can’t really immerse myself into this franchise’s lore like in others. It just feels so hollow often times.

Are these real answers or just roleplaying? It’s sometimes hard for me to differentiate on this sub-forum.

Those aren’t real answers.

The evidence for your questions, you’ll find in game. Your question is if those races : Trolls(in general I suspect?), Orcs and Tauren can read?
Well, they all have written language, so they therefore are able to read too, right?
Look at the different troll tribes, aside the Zandalari(Wich I think are obvious, considering what you’ve seen from their culture in BFA).
The Amani, The Farraki, The Gurubashi and the Drakkari all have/ had temple cities:In their cities you found and find written texts - in particulair the stone slabs - So yes, they all have a written language and can read.

Orcs next…;
Do they have a written language? Why yes they seem to, runes are their written language(notice boards, adventuring contracts etc), so they must also be able to read it, although I think allot of it is also oral tradition similar to the Tauren.

Tauren; Just visit the Elder Rise in Thunder Bluff, there’s a series of scrolls hanging there giving background lore about the Tauren as a people - So yes, they can write and so they can also read.

Not withstanding that theres ofcourse a portion of each races’ populace that are illiterate, we don’t really know if those are a majority or a minority - same with Alliance races I reckon.
Although I just think the number of illiterates among races like Draenei and Elves is probably alot lower :stuck_out_tongue:

Trolls do have various writings, Zandalari are the scholars society. They are recording history and studies and recipes. In the Great Seal chamber there is a room where you can find tablets and books for example.

But so does other troll tribes. But Trolls also engrave their records in the stone, because paper is easier to damage, Stone can resist many things.

As for Darkspears, in Vanilla when you play mage you also study from the tablets, Darkspears are perfectly aware of Ley lines and how to channel the magic.

And in Ashran when you go to troll district there is very cute scene when Troll inscription trainer asks his raptor to bring him another scroll.

It’s all roleplaying rubbish.

I’d never thought about it really, but yeah… would be nice if Blizzard would give these type of more “savage” races a bit more flair by adding such little details. Some scrolls here and there, carvings or books.

Though one could assume that Dazar’alor has a libary somewhere, the Zandalari seem a bit more civilized that way compared to say the Darkspear living in tiny huts.

Sounds like the same thing that the Ancient Kingdom did in One Piece with the Poneglyphs… :stuck_out_tongue:

That’s true, even though in order to become a Mage you need several years of intense arcane study so in my opinion Darkspears Trolls definitely had standard books too. Probably not in a library like Humans or Elves but some books that they took from their original isles.

Also it’s very weird that in Vanilla Trolls could be Mages but no Warlocks…a Mage of any race could be tainted and corrupted and slowly accept to summon and work with demonic forces and fel magic so Trolls shouldn’t be exceptions. But this is valid for Night Elves and Draenei too after all.

Yeah exactly, this is why it is very cool. I think that it would be super cool if trolls also found of super resistible stone material that would work as WoW’s equivalent of Poneglyph. Another missed opportunity with Zandalari leveling sacrificed for another “Heart of Darkness” reference, azzpull trolls and titan facility. Welp.

Well each person that starts as level 1 is supposed to be a novice, not experienced mage. And since most of the original vanilla mage class quests came from trolls and not forsaken - that would debunk that Forsaken tough them to be mages.
Especially when forsaken couldn’t have a knowledge that trolls possed and it was tied to Kalimdor related stuff. It’s the Darkspears that already lived for 10 years on Kalimdor.

It could be that they were not given warlocks because Warlocks are mostly tied with demons, and troll and demons are a very weird combo. This is why I wouldn’t want for them to be demon hunters.
However trolls do have Hexxers and pyromaniacs, and this is what Affliction and Destruction trees are for. So I assume this is why they eventually got this class in cataclysm.

Pretty sure every sapient race in WoW has some form of scrolls or stone tablets, so they can definitely read.
