Or figure things out for yourself?
I’d imagine the majority just go online these days to look up the best talent set, bis gear and highest performing class for a role.
If you do figure things out for yourself, have you ever been judged?

Well, no. I don’t watch guides for raids, dungeons, my spec or picking a class. But at the same time i don’t do above +20 keys or mythic raiding anymore.
Also talents sometimes I do look up, but even when i do i personalize them to make them work for me.
*It’s important to note that the type of content you do should dictate what you do. If you do the super high end stuff, then, yes, if you don’t know how x or y works, you should familiarize yourself. If no, then you don’t have to. But some people are really anxious about it and they do it anyway, I don’t blame them either.
Depends. Friends would never. Strangers have tried giving me tips(some were passive aggressive of course, but that’s what I get for playing with strangers) but nothing more than that. That being said I am giving it my best and succeeding more often than not so that might be a part of it.
My very first character I had no idea what I was doing and the player base was insanely mean to me. Started back in TBC and existing players had no patience for anyone new. That hasn’t changed over the years tbh. It’s the reason I’m always kind to new players.
I quickly learnt that I have no clue what to do with talent trees, got flamed by other players, admittedly I don’t feel the are amazing either. So I just use whatever someone else has worked out is best for whatever content and then I just do the little tweaks for affixes etc.
Now I’m a seasoned player I’m more likely to glance over a class guide to see what basic rotation I should be following. However, if it’s not a paladin it’s only every going to cap and be retired. So I don’t really have a big vested interest. My main I do read up about what my bis is, I sim, etc etc. I don’t look up dungeons or raids in advance. I may consult a guide to find out what the differences are for mythic.
you must have been on a bad server then, i had the opposite experience. Back in tbc people were often okay with a new player joining them because finding groups could take ages otherwise. And if you said you were new people were fine with explaining or marking things.
Now however things are much more fast paced and with harder raids/dungeons people now have way less patience for new players or even players wich havent done the curve yet despite being experienced players . But in tbc it really wasnt that bad
You’re never judged because you try to figure to figure things on your own. You’re judged because you’re deadweight. No one cares about what you play with as long as you do the job. Which is fairly understandable.
I usually read talents around in order to get the gist of it, then I hop on the class discords to deepen my understanding of it. Understanding the rotation, the way spells works, that kind of stuff. And after playing for a while, I start adjusting talents to my liking, there are always flex points that can be moved around.
Oh, constantly! It’s quite fun to test new alts in solo shuffle, there you can become very educated on whatever any member of your family is up to!
A mix of everything.
I think its important to understand the “why”.
I read guides / run sims then figure out what works for me.
It’s always important to take into account that if a talent is a few % stronger but it’s super akward for you to work with playing a different one can translate into a bigger damage increase. ![]()
Not really follow.
I might check out a guide but I’m pugging a lot. When I see guides not picking up dispels I’m just like “lol, what”. Then I spec into the dispel, unless it’s ridiculously costly to do so - mainly looking at feral druids here.
bein a filthy casual i check rarely for tactics in dungeon\raids.
When im in difficulty )normally to find treasures or entrances) i check on comments on wowhead or some youtube videos.
In ancient times thottbot was my bible (with alakaza - or somethin like that) as a close second. Websites for more civilized eras… before the obscurantism… before wowhead ![]()
For quests, drops and what not I refer to WoWhead.
For leveling, no. But I do look at profession leveling guides that provide the most cost effective way of leveling them.
For raiding I initially go in blind to not ruin the first time experience. I don’t even look at PTR stuff beyond collectibles.
for talents, yes because they sim and find the perfect & highest performing ones but i make a lot of changes on them . i just leave the stat gains etc. there and move the utilities according to my playstyle.
i don’t follow rotations tho i don’t think it’s something you have to do in a certain way, at least for some classes
The only guide I follow is talents.
Everything else? Trial and error.
This is one of the easiest MMORPGs in existence, so no, I don’t look up guides. They weren’t really a thing when I started playing either. I’ll read up on raid bosses before going the first time though and if I really can’t figure out a quest I’ll look for a solution to that. I don’t mind other people relying on guides though, everyone should do what makes their playtime more enjoyable for them.
Talking to others, it seems you either get one or the other. My first realm was Dunemaul, but tbh it’s much of a muchness. I don’t find the playerbase has changed much over time, I didn’t even get to do dungeons while levelling until Wrath introduced the LFD system. That was such a godsend.
No, its because huge databases and elaborate guides exist
Lol no.
I don’t need the man telling me where to go or what to do.
I make my own way, even if that way is nowhere or face down in a ditch somewhere.
why play the game if you can read essays about it and watch others do it instead ?
Go to the ditch.
No, I don’t care about their opinion, especially when the content has been out for weeks, and even the weakest specs can clear it.
