I only copy talents of high rated players, then make some changes to those talents according to my taste and playstyle.
Reading guides is something low exp people do, at least for PvP.

I don’t have time nor will to figure things out, so yea I do read guides and do what the guide tells me to do. The illusion of playing the way you like is just that most of the times, an illusion, especially if you play with other people.
There are a few exceptions, like, if I like a specific talent and I really want it, I usually adjust my build to have that talent even if it means a dps loss, but I don’t care. As long as it’s one or two talents most people won’t even notice it (for instance, I like having second wind on my warrior, and usually it’s not in the build, but I use it anyway)
I check guides to get the basic needs for a spec then I only check general stat priority (that’s only for the classes I don’t play much).
For my tank, I usually check mostly the in-game dungeon guide, and for a bit more complicated boss fights (DOTI season 2) I checked youtube reels for tank (1 min per boss to get the mechanics).
The only time I caught myself going way deeper in guides is for my hunter with the pet reviews & stable management
I do it like this:
Whenever a new expansion is announced, I start to collect the information about the new class-features blizzard gives to us. Making my first thoughts and discuss it with some friends.
When Beta is released and I get an invite, I test the poop out of everything related to class-design. I dont care for the numbers much but consider the likelyhood of their position. More discussions… and I start to make builds for classes that interest me… and ofc even more discussions
In the prepatch I do my final tests and choose my main. Which is usually shaman. Than my alts if I think I have time.
When the new expansion launches I level and playtest some more stuff in dungeons.
At the end I compare my builds with my fav. highend-play, see if I did a mistake. And correct it if needed, since I dont wanna do the math on which of the builds I made is the best numberwise.
For my main (Shaman) I usually predict the builds right, since I have lots of experience and I am also on a perma exchange of informations with other shamans.
For alts I level build stuff I find fun while leveling, make a small build for dungeons. But than just read a guide. Since I dont know enough to make educated guesses… but its still fun to think about it.
I never have been judged because I usually play well regardless of my builds, and if I test stuff on my own its on content where it doesnt matter (lower keys).
I just like having fun testing stuff.
Just spending 30 mins a day in front of the target dummy’s can be more beneficial to your own play style than reading what some 4k IO player does on a guide, everything can be seen as subjective, what works for them might not work for you and vice versa
