Do You Think You Get Your Money's Worth For Your Sub?

Do you feel like WoW is worth your subscription cost monthly?

Right now, I don’t think I can understand the justification of paying the amount currently just to gain access to the servers after paying for the expansion also. I feel like the patches aren’t up to scratch and I feel they’re under developed for the amount of income they get through subscriptions.

What’s your opinion?

Right now? No way. Overall throughout the years? 100% I’m subbed because of friends not because of the game.

I’m enjoying leveling my rogue up a lot. It’s challenging but fun. I’ve not played much in the last few years, so this is discovery and delight.

I’m thinking I’ll try to do all the quests in the game at some point. And that should keep me busy for a while.

Depends on the person I guess.

As you can probably see by my achievements, I’ve a lot to go still so for someone like me the game is a gold mine.

If you don’t think the game is worth your money, stop playing, take a break. I promise you, forcing yourself to play WoW can totally ruin the experience and you forget where the ‘fun’ is.

Gaming is a hobby for some, a job for others.

As I do a lot more than just raid and m+ I’d say yes, if I didn’t I’d most likely say no.

Oh that’s not what I mean. (I definitely will be taking a break soon, no biggy!)

I’m just interested in other people’s feelings. I’ve just felt like currently I’ve paid for the expansion for what it was, but the extra addon of the sub fee feels like it’s not gone back into development personally.

I’m super glad other players find that it’s worth the cost of the expansions + the sub fee to gain access to the servers though

I buy WoW tokens with Gold and earn the 300k in about a week so… Yeah I’m fairly sure what little enjoyment beside the economy I get from the game is well worth the price i’m paying.

out of curiosity, what part of leveling do you find challenging?

Absolutely! if you find easy ways to make gold and there’s plenty of people spending their IRL money on selling the tokens for gold; you’re pretty much laughing and playing a free game.

Gold making burnt me out in Cata though trying to get Rooster and Spec Tiger mount, so the last thing I want to do is play the auction. I actively stay away from it lol

I think it’s a little bit hard to kill enemies. Especially if they are elites. My health is almost always low, so I must pause to eat.

But I don’t mind it being a challenge really. Makes me have to think before I act.

I mean yes, because it’s not a lot of money and it probably pays me back by keeping me off the booze and out of the pub for a couple of nights per week. My game time probably ends up in the region of 10-20p per hour, and that’s not including the idle time where I’m just tickling the mission table or doing Pandaria rep grinds.

That said, do I feel my money is being well spent? No. I feel like the game is constantly pushed in directions that every player community is saying “we don’t want that”. I’m definitely not subscribed to the same game I was in 2008, and not all the differences are positive, imo.

Do I feel that in general, the offering of WoW for £10 pcm is fair and reasonable? Probably not. £120 per year is significant. If a new game launched and said it was a £120 up front cost and you get 1 year of access, I’d be incredibly, incredibly scrupulous about deciding whether or not to play. I’d expect 5/5 star and 99% reviews. It’d need to be the best damn game that ever there was.

Right now, WoW isn’t that level of quality. It does have a lot of the people who I’ve connected with over many years, and I mostly play for the social engagement; but the game itself could do so much more to keep me entertained. Outside of dungeons I really struggle to find things I want to do. I’ve run out of classes I want to level to 50, and there’s no solo gameplay beyond 50. If I can’t arrange a group, then I just don’t log in any more, and that’s not a happy place.

TLDR, WoW’s annual cost is significant, and it’s not worth that on technical merit. The only reason to pay for it, imo, is because you enjoy social gaming with other people. But if you have that, then the actual cost/hour isn’t terrible. Hard to recommend to new players, easy to see why people stick with it.

Really nice read Alenwin. Literally took the words out of my mouth honestly. I’m also baring in mind there’s a lot of EU countries that are a lot poorer than mine as well. Although the argument can always be made that if you’re poor then you should be prioritizing other things than a video game. Still, I like your answer

no 100% do not think so …

the game should not have a subscription until 10.0 as a apology to the remaining players.

Absolutely not. With 8 months between each patch and €15/mo. that’s €120 for 9.1.

Do you think 9.1 was worth €120?

Of course it could be redeemed by excellent customer service and heavy-handed manually reviewed anti-cheating and botting measures, but we aren’t getting that, either.

When you put it like that it’s actually scary. My guts literally curdled.

As for the CS, maybe good. Not really sure right now, but I’ve had nothing but sour experiences since maybe Cata? CS before that was literally A+++ imo

You know, from experience and observation (I’m old and have a varied history :joy_cat:); the more you’re struggling for cash, the more you need to spend the money on a sub to some form of entertainment that can actually keep you engaged for many hours per month. You need it.

Because you can’t just go out and get some fancy food and drink when you’re bored on a thursday, and if you can’t work out how to occupy your eyes and hands, you risk self-destructive behaviours. If I meet someone on low income who’s paying for 1-2 game subs monthly, I don’t consider it a waste - it’s stopping them wanting to spend money on booze, cigs, cinema tickets, etc.

That said, money for me was tightest in the early noughties… and games tended to be an up-front cost, then go find a private server where you were happy. There were no subscriptions. I don’t like that WoW has us pay for both a monthly sub and the expansion releases. Feels like one or the other is appropriate.

Same experience here unfortunately.

Previously I never thought about the subscription as expensive, to me it was a reasonable price given the time I spent playing when compared to a night out or a decent meal.

Of late I tend to agree with others, for what people are paying then personally I do think it’s too much. This may be because I recently came from another game (not an MMO) it cost me £17 and gave me around 6 months of playtime (playing nearly every evening).

To be honest, the only reason I’m currently subbed, is because I desperately needed something to help me forget my real life worries. I don’t think I would have returned otherwise. I had originally planned to take a longer break than this. But as long as this game offers me some peace of mind and a place to “escape” to, it’s worth paying for.
