Does dragon riding get better?

Hi guys,

I finally leveled to 70 and dragon riding has been very unfun so far and has slowed me many times, overall degrading my leveling experience.

I had to wait for vigor frequently, stuck on the ground and basically just standing in place doing nothing, or getting stuck in a tree and having to go back to the ground, get vigor and try to fly anew, unable to stay in the air during AFK moments, when trying to move short distances for example to get to more quest mobs overshooting and landing farther than intended.

Does it improve if I spend the time to collect all the glyphs? I’m mostly a PVP player and I’ll need to fly just for open world pvp, so I’m debating whether to try to get into dragon riding or just wait till they enable normal flying.

Yeah. Unless you f-up with the momentum on long distances, you basically have infinite flying at high speed.

Short answer: Yes

Long answer: Yeeeeeeeeeeees
Glyphs make flying completely different & much easier

I recommend getting an addon, flying around the map and collecting them ALL

You might be doing it wrong on top of lacking whatever you need for it. I noticed on the beta that how I controlled my drake had a lot of impact on how far and well I would fly. It kinda points it out in the tutorial too.

Yes, the more glyphs you get and the more you practice/get used to it the better and more fun it becomes.

I started to feel it getting better once upgraded about half the talents for it in beta but even now when I’m at the very beginning it feels much more fun because I’ve got the “knack” of it.

Just keep practicing!

There’s a number of mechanics that a lot of players aren’t aware they should be doing to improve it.

One of them is to always look directly up when you use the gain height skill and then almost immediately change back to the direction you’re going. That way you activate vigor regen, gain a lot of height and gain speed all at the same time. When I say look up, I literally mean vertical. Not diagonal, not almost vertical… full vertical. Activating that skill without facing vertically is a mistake; you gain less height and don’t always activate the regen or gain speed.

thanks for this tip.

I had noticed that the height gain worked better while looking up, but this confirms it.

Anyway @ the OP, get those glyphs ASAP, they make a night and day difference, especially the final row.
I took a break from leveling while in the first zone to get them all in all the zones and it was absolutely worth it.

Ion also said that in future patches the dragonriding will get even better and more close to full flight (It is already pretty much full flight with all the glyphs so I guess even more vigor and regen or extra abilities like hovering).

The glyphs make a difference so that you’re not sat about as often waiting for charges.

You can also just spend them as you gather them. The menu is available when you click on the Dragon Isles Summary button on your minimap. I used an addon HandyNotes Dragonflight Glyphs to mark them all on my map. Other addons are available ofc.

Not long after I got my dragon I flew around and picked them all up. Some other extras are unlocked via completing the storyline in each zone. The best part is you don’t have to repeat it on alts.

Thanks everyone!!!

Its very worth it to spend the time right away to collect them all, you only have to do it ONCE. Then on your alt you have access to all the mounts and ALL 48 points as soon as you step off the zeppelin the first time on Dragon Isles.

Wonder what you would have done if flying wasnt there to begin with like the last xpans.

I would have run on my ground mount since zones would have been balanced for non-flying altogether

Lol it improves greatly. Admittedly in the beginning it is just gliding, but eventually you’ll be able to stay airborne basically permanently, and with a lot of speed.

Even more reason to upgrade your dragonriding. There’s a talent that allows you to dismount airborne enemies with your dragon. No more nets!

Def get those Glyphs, well worth it and you only need to do it once per account.

Im pretty terrible at dragonriding though. I love it for coasting and long distance but once I start going fast then Im a hazard to trees and mountains everywhere!!LOL
Although it is weird to go back to other zones and ride your normal flying mount…I kept wanting to get off and give it a push when I couldnt get a speed boost!
