Does timewalking let you experience the full story?

everything i read about this feature is more heavily focused on the technical aspects and levels and xp and gear but i just want to play it for the lore. is that possible or is it only a piece of the story?

It has whatever still exists in the game, just scaling to a higher level. Some expansions have more preserved than others but that’s just the nature of the game.

By “Timewalking” here I think you mean Chromie Time.

“Timewalking”, as it is commonly used, refers to specific weeks when both levelling and max-level characters can queue for random dungeons to get scaled rewards.

“Chromie Time” is the feature where you can talk to Chromie on a low-level (10 to 68 now, I think) character and she will send you to your choice of expansion to do those quests and dungeons and have the mobs scale to you.

If you want to play through for the lore, you certainly can. The best way would depend on what you want to do.

Any one expansion’s quests will give you much more than enough XP to level a character from 10 to 70. If you start, say, Wrath on a Level 10 and just keep doing all the quests in the traditional order, you will probably hit 70 early in The Sgtorm Peaks, without ever starting Icecrown - at least, that’s how it was before the recent launch; they might have tweaked it some either way.

So if you wanted to do the WHOLE thing, which would be a mammoth task, you would be well advised to send one separate character to each expansion - maybe you could squeeze two characters of levelling out of each expansion with some clever quest planning, and dungeons.

In many expansions, some dungeons and the raids really are part of the main story. You can go back and solo those, maybe on a different character, when you reach 70 or 80.

All the lore and story is there

EXCEPT

the bits that have been removed.

So what has veen removed?

All of Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms was revamped in Cataclysm, so youwill be seeing the current quests rather than the originals.

A short segment of the Wrathgate was removed in Wrath. You can catch it on YouTube.

The Legendary quest chains were removed from some later expansions, starting in Mists. The Legion Artefacts are still there, though you no longer need to do an endless grind to power them up. But teh Cloak from Mists is unavailable. The Ring from Warlords. I think the Cloak from Battle for Azeroth is still there; only the sequence of getting the Heart and the Cloak has changed.
