I’m fairly new to the game and I got it because I really enjoy the raiding and dungeon progression that it offers.
Thinking about what class to play, I figured it would be best to start with a DPS spec, until I familiarize with all the aspects of the game and the raid mechanics, since I wouldn’t be expected to know everything right off the bat like a tank and the raid wouldn’t depend on me as much.
I’m looking for a DPS spec that is fairly simple and fun, but that is viable and provides value to the group, so I can focus more on learning the actual game rather than my rotation or such.
I don’t mean FotM as I know it changes and I shouldn’t base my choice on this.
DH - Really good in M+ and valuable in raids, quite easy to pick up, but you are GCD locked from the get go. Downside is you only have 1 DPS spec.
Rogue - Great in M+ and great in raids, solid utility, you would have 3 DPS specs to chose from, each with their own way to play. You can play are more dot focused build as Assas, or a bit more in your face with Outlaw. In terms of difficulty it’s not to bad, but Energy and combo point management is a thing.
Mage - Not top tier in either raid or M+, but not super terrible either, current numbers indicate that raid wise you’d be in the lower end of the middle. You’d bring great utility, and would be ranged, which imo gives you a better overview of the fight, and can make learning the raids/dungeons a bit easier. Like rogue you’d have 3 DPS specs, each with their own playstyle.
Frost - Very proc dependent
Arcane - Mana management
Fire - Not as proc dependent as Frost.
For a DPS spec to get started with, these are the 3 i’d recommend, because they often do alright to great in both types of content.
But please do note, we’ll more than likely get a tuning run before mythic opens, so right now, we really have no clue how the specs will do in the new season and raid
Yeah, this is a good list. I’d go with rogue or mage. It’s very rare for a pure dps class to have all 3 specs be unviable. I’d actually recommend you start levelling all the classes to see what you like. Nobody can tell you what you’ll like, you’ll just have to check and see… I picked a warrior back in bc because I liked the idea of hitting things very hard and being hit by things very hard.
P.S. try out warlock. Every raid team needs a warlock. Specially an engineer warlock.
Warlocks might be great in raids, but M+… meeeh… sure might not matter at all until 15+ or even 20+, but we all know what the pug community is like. Thats at least why i left it off my list of recommendations :b
