Draconic life cycle relative to Birth rates

A mention in another topic made me think a bit about the trends of the birth rates of dragons in Azeroth.

In DF, we are at a point that there is a shortage of eggs due to various factors from past events.

Meanwhile in the old times in WoW there seemed to be almost faaaaaar too many dragon eggs around (which got destroyed more often than not).

In biology there are 2 basic life strategies, the “r” Strategy and the “K” strategy. The r strategy is to be short lived with high birth rate (mice are an example). The R strategy is to be long lived with lower birth rate (humans are an example).

Now lets consider the life history of the dragons. They live for over 10000 years unless killed. They seem to be “K” strategy creatures.
If it was normal for dragons to produce as many eggs as in the older WoW expansions then dragonkind would be overwhelming the world since they are long lived apex predators.

How did the dragons managed to spam eggs in the past but now where they need to repopulate, they cannot?
Did the loss of the aspect powers made all the dragonkind lose most or all their fertility?

This might be a weird topic but I wanted to write about it.

i had the same doubt while reading the sillmarillion or dnd lore. with a lifespan of millennia (dunedain and elves) the race should overpopulate the world and not goin extinct.
Low childrate It seems to be a common lore strategy in fantasy

I am pretty sure that there is a mention about how rare and precious an elf child was considered by other Elves in Middle Earth
