Dragon - Appreciation Thread 🐲

We can blame it all on pursue of realisim in fantasy. Four limbed dragons may seem more realistic seeing that all other vertebrates in those settings are four limbed as well. It would be bizzare from evolution point of view for a proto dragon creature to grow additionl pair of limbs all of sudden.
Though it’s fantasy and we should let it remain shaped by our imagination rather than current knowledge of real world if that’s author wish. It’s a bit like the skeletal gryphon controversy. People often say ā€œit shouldn’t be able to fly with such wingsā€ yet it doesn’t bother them that it moves without muscles. It’s probably same with number of dragon’s limbs.

Crudely speaking, what you call dragons is what Europe turned the ancient Chinese dragon into. It’s westernized, and as comes to no surprise, typically demonized as a scary menace that steals virgins and kills brave knights. An expression of the western mentality where light is good and dark is bad, compared to the much more enlightened mentality of the far east where light and dark can be good or bad in their expressions and form two poles that need each other, which also leads to a profound understanding that balance brings health. (And occasionally owls.)

i prefer smaug as the dragon archetype myself. Intelligent, talky, dominating and horrifyingly terrifying. The purest expressin of nature. Deaath on wings but will happily kick your bum in chess and have a giggle.
I don’t like deathwing, conniving and deceiptful. Seems such a shame to debase such a glorious epitomy of the grandeur of nature.

This was the first dragon I feared in a game.

I am well versed in what Niflheim is, but just calling it ā€œNiflheim dragonā€ is vague when it has a name and people get confused with what it’s named :stuck_out_tongue: having phrased it as ā€œDragon in Niflheimā€ would make more sense grammatically.

I can say the TES lore is more constant in what it purveys and more respected than Warcraft lore in the later years due to the subpar writing from blizzard, but each to their own in that regard.

Blizzard ruined me on that one as I always want to call it Nithogg.

The writing has always been subpar in all honestly, but that is the price you pay when your writing team changes as much as it has.

And the fun part is that on the other thread here, when I said there is only one other game writer as bad as that lady, who was hired for BfA and some books outside game… is that guy who works for Bethesda Game Studios.

And TES lore is not as well represented in single player games. No. Especially in Skyrim, where this certain guy was lead writer.

To be fair, Skyrim, Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 are absolute master pieces story-wise compared to BfA so far.^^

Although Skyrim always lacked the kind of alien and interesting atmosphere Morrowind always had… we need more mushroom-tower-growing wizards and ancient-steampunk-demigods… and mudcrab traders with more money than the emperor.

With FO3, 4 and Skyrim is that only main quest (which are always seen as worst part of the games) are written by the guy. The side quests are often done by any random guy in studio. That’s BGS style. They allow random employees add some of their own into games. Even 76.

Main quests in those games are so full of holes, and are plain ā€˜meh’. If I’d compare meta and main plot of BfA and Skyrim/FO3 and FO4 I am very-very-very confused and in struggling.

Least bethesda games had mod support and relevance of main quest eventually became non issue. But try to avoid main quest and war campaign and Sylvanas in BfA. No you cannot. You cannot even fly without hearing about her !

We do have some quality dragons in WoW, for sure

I did like Smaug though :sunglasses:

Fallout4 is so weak that its a first ā€œrpgā€ I didn’t finish. Instead of more dialogue options we got build your house simulator. Best Fallout game was New Vegas for me.

Wyverns are the manlets of dragon society

Actually the lore is pretty well represented and coherent if you just bother reading your quest log ontop of the voiced dialogue, not to mention the many NPC interactions, books, signs, tablets etc that all tell the story whereas WoW has to retcon half their story every new expantion, even with Chronicles that retcon eachother with every volume despite being the ā€œBe all end allā€ to that debate.

I’m not saying either is perfect but of the two, TES lore is better in my opinion.

But still dragons :>

Lets agree to disagree. I have read TES story content also in Creation and construction kits. I do not think you can read the quests any more thoroughly than this.

It may be better, and it might be better represented in ESO (I wouldn’t know as my ESO career ended its closed alpha), but I wouldn’t say it is good. And being better of the two is not much of a compliment to it either.

Bethesda is better at building environments and worlds instead writing a story. And Bethesda fans do not really expect them to write a good story either. Mods will fix it.

Unfortunately you cannot fix Warcraft with mods.

Think we have to take lore in some video games a bit losely and not to serios :3

otherwise why not make a point at wow’s horde mount the " wyvren " wich if you want to be direct are actually a breed of manticore

Also wouldnt the black dragonflight not join the horde with ebonheart? And the blue flight with kalicose?

Ebonheart have no children if I am not mistaken and Black Prince Wrathion that is clearly leader of black dragonflight favors Alliance for a long time.

To be honest i think its never is specified or not if he had any children or not so we cannot rule it out just yet. I think the whole character of ebonhorn is actually made so the flights do keep there neutral appearance even tough we know many of the flights do have there preffered choise i think they never would choice a faction since they find those things often to mundane and prefer to see things from a larger perspectife ( thats why alextraza is so easy to forgive the orcs even afther her rape sesion in Grim batol )

Wrathion is a exception but dont forget he is techniclay still a whelp and inexperienced and impulsive as seen with his choices in Mop and WoD and he killed of almost his entire flight not including ebonhorn so lore wise there more void elf npcs then black dragons left so hes a black dragon without a flight and ty to dragon soul dragons are atm infertile so no new dragons can be bred atm unless something changes in shadowlands

Tbh, i find them overrated.

Kinda sick of dragons in movies / games.

I told you many times kaisena we cannot replace everyting with stick figures specially not dragons.

Think of all the wood we have to use and we already losing giant tree’s in wow at a alarming rate
