Say whatever you want about WoW lore but at least they made dragons right. After Skyrim, Game of Thrones, Hobbit and recently~ Witcher I am happy that at least we have a REAL dragon.
Dragon… A big draconic creature with four legs, wings at its back, ability to breathe fire and other substances.
Not~
Wyvern… A small draconic creature with two legs and limb-wing used for both walking and flying.
You might not notice it!
You might not know it!
But this is the truth~
Praise Dragons!
Kill Wyverns~
(And now give us Black Dragonflight as Allied Race for Alliance with dragon flying-form transformation)
They are of the same family but not the same. There is clear description of both recognizable by most people. One of reason why Chinese Dragon is called Chinese Dragon and not just Dragon. Dragon is a Dragon just like Wyvern is a Wyvern
“The word dragon entered the English language in the early 13th century from Old French dragon, which in turn comes from Latin: draconem (nominative draco) meaning “huge serpent, dragon”, from Ancient Greek δράκων, drákōn (genitive δράκοντος, drákontos) “serpent, giant seafish”.[4][5] The Greek and Latin term referred to any great serpent, not necessarily mythological.[6] The Greek word δράκων is most likely derived from the Greek verb δέρκομαι (dérkomai) meaning “I see”, the aorist form of which is ἐδρακόμην (édrakon).[5]” - wikipedia
Origin does not matter as much as established lore~ since they did not exist afterall. I can make an elf and call it a dwarf but it still will be stupid (say hi to Elder Scrolls).
Most of movies/shows I mentioned had clear description of appearance and they changed it for whatever ignorant reason.
Western Dragon commonly called Dragon is a pure form of dragon in all self-respecting fantasy that is not asian-themed.
That’s the thing, there is no one ‘established dragon lore’ just like there is not one definition ‘what makes a roleplay game’. Each sub group believes their take is the correct one. Also considering mythology and origins of different countries the take ‘what is a dragon’ does differ and if some youtuber claims there is a one ‘lore’ for dragons, then they lie.
And as I said only thing is that wyrven is bipedal, but they are still dragons.
lets look at English dictionary ?
Definition of dragon
1 archaic : a huge serpent
2 : a mythical animal usually represented as a monstrous winged and scaly serpent or saurian with a crested head and enormous claws
3 : a violent, combative, or very strict person
4 capitalized : draco
5 : something or someone formidable or baneful
They refer to dragons as serpents, and to serpents as dragons. Both the Midgard Serpent and Niflheim dragon are viewed in the same light despite one being a giant snake and the other being an actual dragon.
Anyway as has been pointed out there is no clear definition of “dragon” and even by European standards (which is the most commonly reffered and origin of 4 limbs 2 wings) has been widely debated on what is and isn’t a dragon.
Therefore Wyverns are dragons as much as a 4 limbed 2 winged lizard.
PS. Elder Scrolls have a better lore than WoW at this point, just sayin’ as a big fan of both franchises.
Well… Maybe its up to fantasy world to choose what is what~ I am still mad that they ignored original description from books and their own lore while making this games/shows/films.
Its one thing making your own lore (that I dont like) and another ignoring your own lore
For example in my language are no words that start with letters like d, b, c, etc. Those are foreigner letters, so in our mythology all those dragonic creatures are ‘giant snakes’ dragon as word in my language is relatively modern and we are encouraged to use word that can be translated as ‘serpent’ instead.
Giant snakes and serpents spoke strange words and gave people wealth in local mythology and with elves (elves in my country are small ugly creatures that hated people) guarded forests.
I can’t remember sword of destiny exactly, but I thought golden dragons did have wings connected to their front legs (And as such make them wyverns by common convention).
If you mean “Hobbit” dragon in reference to the movie then I can see your point, although to be fair Smaug in Tolkien lore (books) wasn’t exactly a Glaurung and especially no Ancalagon. But Smaug himself was no slouch, he just allowed himself to be overcome by his greed for a bed of gold and he was more powerful than the movie and “The Hobbit” portrayed him. Even Sauron when he was at the height of his power under Morgoth feared the drakes because they had a stronger will than him and answered only to Morgoth. It’s possible they still serve with him in The Void.
