It will go f2p when blizz decides to fully cater to the chinese customers. Those guys dont mind microtransactions and such. wich is also the reason diablo 4 went mobile
Free to Play only works if you are like Fortnite and on every single console and device available and you can create this need to play the game, so that everyone plays it.
If WOW went free to play then it would have to be on every single console and device available to survive. Of course all gear mogs would become cosmetics and in the store like Fortnite is and we would have to buy those WOW bucks. We would also have to buy access to special events, holidays, and expansion packs and god knows what else.
I could see WOW classic being free to play as well as the base game of modern WOW, I think now it is free to play up to level 20, perhaps if they upped it to level 40, they could get people to stick around.
while i dont like the monthly fee cause there is a niggling feeling that if you dont play for most of the 30 days it a waste of money, its not the worst thing ever. but dropping the fee wont fix the issue of the state of the game atm. if you think dropping the fee ALONE will fix all the issues, it wont. would dropping the fee ALONG with some drastic and sensible changes fix it? quite possibly.
would it go like SWTOR? probably not, though i would not put it past activision. when i logged back into SWTOR a month ago, after having played from launch for the first 3 months then never again, the set up was terrible. gold capped at a stupidly low amount, xp gained reduced. so much seeming to be sold on a shop. i will never play it again, and also while wow has always looked cartoonish to a degree, its not terrible artwork. going back to SWTOR, the whole spacestation just looked sickly with the colour saturation. maybe its just me, but it doesn’t seem to have aged well.
on the other hand, the only other game i played (except WAR which is gone now) is gw2. that is free to play, and the micro transactions dont seem to have any great effect on you playing the game. the only 2 i can think of is the number of alt slots is limited before you have to buy more, and the number of bags/bank slots is also limited before you have to buy more. but with all the money you save from no sub, you can easily buy extra bag slots no problem. gw2 seems to have so much right, but there are some things which just dont sit well with players overall which is a shame, as it might actually be competition for wow then.
BUT having said that, the fact that blizz dont release numbers anymore, we dont exactly know the health of the game, however we think its performing.
I’m honestly fine with the monthly fee, but since the fee itself is so high, I’d expect the services to cost less. Having to pay 30€ for a faction change is ridiculous.
there is no need for them to go f2p because people are paying the sub fee and are buying the store items aswell i dont even wanna know how much money they are making with the wow tokens. i bet that even after most people have unsubbed they are still making more profit per month then in wotlk with tokens store mounts etc
