Druid or Mage for Shadowlands?

Hi all,

I started WoW 2 months ago roughly, and started with a Druid. I tried all other classes to level 20 and found that only the Druid and Mage interest me honestly. I only play two roles in the game, ranged DPS and recently tank. With that in mind, could you guys perhaps help me with a main for Shadowlands? I’ll likely play both, but would much prefer to dedicate more time to one over the other. I’ll be looking at Mythic+/PVP and maybe when I get around to it a raid or two. I do very much prefer DPS most of the time, but sometimes tank for convenience / a change.

I’ve listed some bits and bobs of my dislikes/likes below.

Druid:
I like the Guardian and Balance specs, love the lore behind a Druid and feel pretty immersed when playing.
Love the ease of travel form for questing/gathering and Wild Charge to further increase movement.
I’m not a huge fan of being a giant chicken/blue astral dude in balance though honestly. I love how gear is relatively shareable across specs, albeit a little weaker on balance if I go mostly crit.
I also really don’t like feral, and have never tried resto, but I’m not much of the healing type anyway.
PVP is OK, not amazing, but OK.
Changes for Balance on Shadowlands look a bit … meh? Not really sure how I feel about them.

Mage:
I only like Frost and Fire, Arcane puts me off pretty badly, the play style just isn’t fun.
I really enjoy Frost, much more than Fire / Balance Druid.
I can’t tank, sadly.
The mogs are really cool lol.
Frost is pretty much unchanged in Shadowlands, just one change which is the Winter’s Chill - a very much needed change too, really like it.
Gear is very spec independent, not amazing.
Portals rock.
PVP frost cc is fun, very fun lol.
PVP big fire is fun.

So, my dilemma is pretty clear, I like ranged DPS, but my Druid looks a bit iffy in Shadowlands, so I’m now torn between Mage and Druid as I can always have one good spec on my Mage, but on the flipside I can’t tank occasionally like I do on my Druid. Any tips / advice to sway me is greatly appreciated!

Write down your goals pick your class

from a performance perspective, mages are better overall but it depends on what you feel the most comfortable playing as you could burn out fast if your not having as much fun.

Druid. They got their old starfall back too, which is super fun, and druids are rarely ever in a bad spot, if ever, if played well (including PvP). And if you ever decide to try out other specializations as well, such as melee or healer, you can do it without rerolling another class.

There’s a million mages, and you’re usually bound to one spec that is the best one, so hope that you enjoy all 3 specs of mage equally.

I’ve always been an indecisive player, and find that all the quality of life that druid brings (looting while flying/increased swim speed/fast run speed indoors) makes druid a lot more appealing than other classes.

This is pretty much the same boat I found myself in, I just worry balance may become a little bit boring with this different eclipse system coming, otherwise Druid would be an easy choice. Do you not worry about the new eclipse system?

I’m not worried at all to be honest. I think Druid will be really sweet in SL.

I think everyone is in a boat like this…

But i dislike mages, allways have…
Just to fragile for my taste…

Leaves me with balance, shadow and warlock on my plate… Where warlock will make a good alt, as my main should also be a fun healer ( Mythic) as well as a great dps for raids ( and pvp) …

I am currently leaning to Priest as a main…
