DTR computer good enough for BFA/Shadowlands?

Hi!

I want to buy a new computer for WOW. Unfortunately I have to travel a lot, so I need to buy a laptop instead of a desktop. Therefore, I thought about buying a desktop replacement laptop to ensure performance.

I was looking at XMG gaming laptops 17" and connect this to a 27" 144Hz 1440p monitor when I play.
I thought about taking the following configuration:
CPU: 9900K or 10700K (The new 10900K probably gets too warm)
GPU: RTX 2080 Mobile or RTX 2080 SUPER Mobile.
Memory: 32GB or 64GB DDR4-2933

I was just wondering whether the RTX 2080 Mobile is strong enough for 1440p 144Hz on max. Details especially with Raytracing effects coming in Shadowlands? Do you think the FPS would stay okay during Raids?

Traveling with very big and heavy laptop? WoW performance will be limited by the CPU and then by the game MMORPG nature so in mass actor scenes like raids and alike 144 FPS isn’t realistic no matter what hardware you have. DXR effects - as the game isn’t limited by the GPU should perform well in such scenario - but it depends what they will add and if DLSS will be needed and if so - will it be supported.

For travel compatiblity I would check if the laptop is small/light enough to take it as personal baggage. Maybe that XMP Apex 15 with desktop Ryzen (and RTX 2070) or wait for the upcoming Nvidia/Intel ultra-portable vapor-chamber cooled pro gaming laptops?.

Hi! Thanks for your response!
I wouldn’t mind taking the heavy laptop, as initially I even considered to transport a small ITX or mATX desktop in my hand luggage. But to facilitate proper cooling of a 9900K/10900K at this size I would need to use water cooling which will be not possible to get past security at the airport
Having said that, the cooling of the 9900K in the XMG laptops are also air-based, but everything is more compact

*EDIT:
Just found some tests from notebookcheck. com.
CPU: 9900K in laptop has some temp issues and is approx. 15% slower than in a desktop.
GPU: RTX 2080 mobile is therefore about 10% slower @ 1440p compared to RTX 2080 desktop
So in summary I will have about 10-15% less performance in a desktop replacement laptop compared to the same components in a desktop version. That should be good enough for BFA /shadowlands?

You mean the one Linus (LTT) had a look at, the other day?

That setup will be an overkill for WoW anyway.

Linus, der8auer and few laptop review sites.

Just to be sure… are you really asking if the fastest gaming CPU on the market (excluding the 10000 series) and the second fastest GPU will be enough for WoW?

Yeah, because of the following points:
(1) 9900K CPU (or the 10000 series) will most likely throttle because limited cooling in a laptop
(2) RTX2080 mobile is slower than a desktop version and possibly also has temp issues?
(3) 1440p and 144Hz is demanding in WOW, especially raids
(4) raytracing effects are demanding as well and GPU in a laptop cant be upgraded to future series, e.g. RTX 3000 series

Therefore I was wondering if people think such a laptop would be good enough to deliver the FPS on 1440p 144Hz, even with the more demanding graphics in Shadowlands (due to raytracing)

Last week I tested 2014 mac mini with Intel Core i5-4260U and it was doing LFR N’zoth with iGPU on an even playable level.

You will never get 144 FPS in raids/mass combat.

They are optional, not tested yet, not yet available to testing in the alpha, and mobile 2080 will likely be way behind Ampere in 2021. in terms of pure DXR performance if WoW needs more DXR than 2080 then it’s better be AAA class effects.

Thanks a lot for the detailed response.
I heard the raytracing effects will be limited for shadows in shadowland?

The official effects yes, that’s what the option says there.

Yes raytraced shadows with 3 settings from low to high.
VRS will also be supported from the data mining (just improves performance by lowering the quality on the edge of the screen).

Better forget about getting 100+ FPS in raids etc.

Wouldn’t recommend the 10000 series in a laptop as those boosts are based on keeping it at 70 degrees or cooler which is a huge task for a laptop in itself. So thin, light wouldn’t work and would end up being a non-laptop style weighted thing.

Raytracing… Forget the 2000 series cards as those were the first gen and not that good at keeping framerates at all. Nvidia is fixing the problem but won’t be done until the 3000 RTX cards come out.

If sticking with Intel, the 9000 series cpu’s are best to go for, they run cooler and you probably hit the turbo speeds more often than with the 10th series.

Think of the 10th series of cpu’s like the highest end FX processors from AMD. Run too hot, more chance of throttling down during hot weather/room and especially in summer.

The 10th seris is a dead end for a cpu. See what the 11th gen is like but I would expect better performance once 12th gen intel processors come out. Hopefully they’re leaving 14nm by then, it’s a major holdback no matter how many refinemens they’re doing. The 10th Gen isn’t something I would recommend.

Summer temps unless you have a really beefy cooler (Water cooling here, not air cooling) to cope with it. If not I can see these processors throttling and never hitting even stage 1 or 2 in their boost speeds.

May lose a few frames but on that, a Ryzen 5 3600 or a Ryzen 7 3700 would suit better at this time. Or if you have the money, a Ryzen 9 3900 overclocked will do it with watercooling system.
