A few questions from a relative newbie [six months experience!]…
I’ve tried quite a few dungeons as a l50 solo frost mage. Some are fun – I can work my way through them but it needs a bit of planning.
Some are impossible [Shrine of the Storm, Tol Dagor] – I can do no damage whatsoever to any mob, and as soon as I try I get swarmed and die in seconds.
And in some I find that almost everything is a 1-shot kill for me [Blackrock Mountain]. Even bosses go down after two or three hits. Altho’ fun to start with, the novelty soon wears off and it becomes boring.
Why does this happen? I’ve jumped around a bit between expansions – does this matter?
For example, I can’t progress the Pride Of Kul Tiras storyline because I can’t do any damage at all to the sewer vicejaws that are the first mobs in Tol Dagor: The Fourth Key…
I’ve learned that raids aren’t solo-able. Is that true of some dungeons too?
Dungeons are meant to be group content, until you vastly outlevel or outgear it. BfA dungeons are meant for level 50 players, so unless you outgear it a lot, you won’t be soloing it anytime soon.
As Iremember, in previous expansions, before the level squishing, you bot bonus damage (for a lot) when you’re in a dungeons below your level, for example, if you enter classic dungeons on level 70.
Perhaps Blizzard somehow messed up with scaling so you still get this damage bonus at level 50 even in dungeon that supposed to be done by level 50 as well as by level 10.
You can compare the damage of your abilities in your combat journal or Details in those two dungeons.
So if there’s a dungeon quest in the middle of a storyline [like the Tol Dagor:Fourth Key quest in the middle of the Pride Of Kul Tiras storyline] then that storyline can’t be solo-d? At least not beyond that particular quest.
I hadn’t realised that BfA, and presumably Shadowlands, was so weighted against solo players.
Yes, it cannot be soloed at level 50. But you can level up to 60, get some gear, then you will have 10 levels and about more than 100 item levels advantage, it can be soloed then.
While there are some dungeon quests in shadowlands, they are all side quests. Shadowlands doesn’t have any major storyline quests that require completing a dungeon.
But also remember that “solo player” is your choice and WOW is classified as MMORPG, the first 2 Ms stand for Massively Multiplayer. So naturally there is a log of content not for the solo player.
But you can always use the dungeon finder, the game will automatically find a group of players then you can complete the dungeon. Just follow the group and attack whatever they are attacking.
You can use the dungeon finder without buying shadowlands. Press “i”
Then select what role you want to play (Tank, healer or Damage dealer).
Then select the content you want to do. For example a random dungeon or a specific dungeon, etc. Click “find group”, then wait for the game to find a group of players for you. The options available in the selection depend on your level.
Okay, so this proves my point that the new system in just as confusing as the old one, despite Blizzard claiming it was to make the new player experience more straightforward. Anyway, I’ll try to summarize:
If this is your first character in your account, you are directed towards BFA content. BFA content scales with your level from 1 to 50 including dungeons. Dungeons are meant to be 5-player challenges so you can’t solo them when you are the same level.
In the meantime, all the content in the old expansions are available. These will only scale up to a certain point. Vanilla’s cap (such as Blackrock Mountain) will be level 30 I think, Legion will be level 45, etc. These are lower level than your level 50 character, and you are able to solo them.
If you already have a level 50+ character on your account, if you make a new character, you will be able to select a previous timeline. What this means is, you can play a previous expansion, and it will scale with your level until 50, same as BFA does for you.
You can only use the dungeon finder for the timeline you are on. That means BFA for this character.
