Easy fix for GDKP

Why not just make gold soulbound?

Ok maybe that’ll suck for your alts, so lets go account bound, reasonable?

Sorted, do it Blizz, do it and your isues are fixed instantly.

I think you are forgetting that gold is a currency which the entire point is to trade.
Only thing this would do is that people would start trading with other kinds of currency, like abyss crystals

That would leave the AH problem, they would set a random item for X gold to pass the cut for them.

Blizzard wants RMT, because they have a reason to put in their tokens and profit from that. Gdpks and boosts are essential to Blizzard, because they generate an exaggerated need for gold, which results in more money going to Blizzard.

If Blizzard was against botting and RMT, they could have done multiple things.

  • ban gdkps and their advertisement
  • do something effective against bots
  • hard punishments for buying gold and actually carry these punishments out
  • punish practice/advertisement for arena boosts/“coaching” (maybe even keep arena teams)
  • only allow big gold transfers from months-long friends and monitor/punish accounts juggling 6digit gold values to strangers all day

This would effect the normal player in the rarest of cases and if these rules were actually enforced, the RMT scene would shrink tremendously.

However, Blizzard chose to not only not do anything about these problems, they chose to even widen the RMT scene, by granting people a simple and save option for obtaining gold for money. They officially legalized P2W.

So nothing will change, as long as people profit from RMT. Buyers profit by getting advantages with money, other players get exaggerated amounts of gold for low effort for helping these buyers, Blizzard makes more money (token price>sub price), but on the other hand the integrity and authenticity of classic is thrown aside.

They could prevent the trading of gold inside of raids beyond a trivial value and prevent the trading of items outside of raids, so you leave the raid and the items become soulbound.

But it’s not something easily to implement properly and would make the user experience worse. It also wouldn’t stop GDKP entirely, there are easy workarounds but it would just be another point of friction to make GDKP less attractive. Of course then you would just have pre-bidding.

Stopping gold trading entirely would break the trading economy of the game, it’s not a price worth paying to stop GDKP. GDKP is only bad because it fuels a desire for gold buying, gold buying is only attractive because 3 hours at a job gets you a lot more gold than 3 hours in game, generally speaking.

GDKP is attractive because you either get loot or you get paid, sometimes both.

As far as i know, this would do nothing towards gdkp. Almost all the items are traded inside the raid anyway, maybe except WT gdkps.

This.
And, people are tired of getting unlucky with the RNG rolls (rolling for items). So they rather want it 100% if it drops (paying for it).

What i dont understand though, is why pay for an item if you only gonna raidlog anyway? Atleast pay for an item you know you gonna use in multiple parts of the game (pvp for example).

Seems like the majority of the players want/enjoy gdkp, removing it wont go well i think. But hey, blizz have added/removed stuff without caring about the community anyway. So maybe they wont care.

Its not the gdkp itself thats the problem, imo. Its the rampant use of botting and buying gold(which is made worse with token).
Even if you didnt have botters, you would still have gdkp but with different prices.

They should ban buyers/sellers harshly (i bet they still will, and get the monopoly of gold-selling in their own game)

I can speak for myself and many others here. I raid-log, I have to because I want to do other things. I work, I mountain bike, I train, I play other games, I cook, I drive… So why do I log in? Because every week I want to kill the bosses faster than last week, I want to do more dps than last week.

The chase of self-improvement is what drives me to play and what I enjoy about the game. I actually played in a GDKP guild for part of TBC and most of WOTLK until about 2 months ago. I joined the guild with 1300g to my name the first week of WOTLK raiding, I left the raid with 5k gold and a new belt. I left the guild with an 99% parse average and 40k gold, I server transferred and turned that 40k gold into closer to 60k gold and now I sit on about 70k.

Nothing to spend gold on, I farm ZG/Kara for mounts and I raid log. I enjoy the game a lot, I really enjoy our raids because we are playing the game and not just focused on boring clears, glad to not be playing in GDKP anymore only for the pure reasons I could never compete on contested items and because it turned into “boring clears” for gold.

Yeah, this is fine. Nothing else to do, pve-wise, than to raid-log. I did some arena in the early expansion, but struggled to find partners so kinda stopped. So now i also just raid-log.

Im sensing this is where you and i differ. I dont really care about pve that much, nor do i care about the speed it takes. We have everything on farm, wether we spend 10 seconds longer or 1 min shorter on any given fight, is something i dont care about. Aslong as the bosses die, im fine.

This is my point, i have nothing to spend gold on. I am left with more gold every week after raids (even after i stopped gdkp) than i spend. Gold has no value to me anymore, its just…there. I dont worry about prices on ah (someone would say this is because bots drive prices down), i dont have to worry about economy at all. Whats the point of having a currency if it doesnt matter? Maybe this is different for fresh chars.

A lot of people feel that way, and that’s part of why I moved to a new guild because I was getting bored of the game and I like to optimise, experiment. Actually our raids are on average a little slower than my old guild I think, but I’m having a lot more fun.

This is how I am, raiding earns more gold than it costs at the moment and I get a bit of gold from Kara/ZG mount farms. My gold just goes up slowly over time. I will say tho, that’s not how I felt when I joined my old guild last year with 1300g, I felt like I won the lottery every raid because my gold just went up.

But once you have I think about 50k gold and a geared character, what is there to really spend it on? Gold has a lot of value to new players and alt farmers perhaps, but it really does just level off after a while because you spend no gold.

I was going to play Arena in WOTLK but I only wanted to play with my real life friend, who got his girlfriend pregnant roughly 9 months before WOTLK, the baby was born in September, he decided not to play so I just raid.
