Hi I'm a rookie rogue trying to decide on my final spec,I cannot find out how elaborate planning works or how to use it within my rotation, any advice appreciated
Once you use a finishing move (example envenom) it increases your damage by 10% for the next 4s.
Great PvE talent (in PvP i'd rather go with Master Poisoner).
EP is especially good when doing AoE (when u have the bleeds up on all mobs so your energy regen is insane and never dries out during that fight), u can keep it up the whole fight. Spamming that envenom, keeping the bleeds up, constant 10% dmg increase, few poison bomb procs and you're on top of the damage board.

thanks Bacon I only play PvE really and I'm trying to figure out how to boost my DPS would I be wise to finish mobs with envenom?
at the moment my rotation is
so I'm doing something wrong I'm not sure what YET
thanks again!

That rotation doesn't sound good.
Do you not use garrote while under stealth?
Rupture needs to be used before garrote since it spends combo points and not gives like garrote.
it doesn't matter that much. if you're at the stage where you're worrying about dot uptime then just ignore it.
you can play assa close to optimally by just doing these things:
1) keep rupture and garrote up on the target
2) spend excess combo points on envenom (4+)
3) use toxic blade/exsang, vanish and vendetta on cooldown (making sure to apply garrote when you vanish)
you can minmax beyond that but it doesn't make that much of a difference. just focus on those 3 things and you'll do perfectly fine.

Thanks Retierx I'll do just that
so if I keep envenom & elaborate planning ticking along with 4 combo points I'll be fine?
Hey!
I think you guys misunderstood about Garrote before Rupture and such. He probably meant if you have 5 cp and need to apply BOTH spells THEN you do Rupture first because it will spend your combo points and then Garrote will build new ones. However you should always open with Garrote FROM stealth so it will be your VERY FIRST SPELL. Then you just mut to 4-5 CP and apply Rupture. At this point you have all bleeds running, and you spend every cp on Envenom. You reapply Garrote when it falls off and Rupture when it falls off. There is no order. IF at any point you need to reapply both, Garrote first is you are at or below 3 cp, then Rupture, if at or above 4 Rupture then Garrote. It's just about now wasting cp.
So basically you just apply bleeds and then try to maximize envenom buff and Ep buff on yourself until you need to refresh bleeds. And meanwhile you use your cds. Simple as that ;)

done this and my DPS has doubled, thanks Shadenox!

That's because it gets +80% damage bonus if cast from Stealth with Subterfuge talent, and this damage gets amplified further with the trait Shrouded Suffocation (and that damage also gets boosted by Subterfuge).
To give you an example I only have one of these traits and not 3 and I can still have 12-15k Garrote tics on a dummy ;)

What people didnt tell you.
Your opener should be garrote in to rapture to get Elaborate planning and then use garrote once again. Why!? Because it will increase buffed garrote uptime by a lot and will increase from stealth buff +80% and Elaborate planning for 10%.
For a started should try to use some weak auras to track your buffed garrote so you won't refresh it before it ends when it's buffed. Lose or gains in dps is kinda huge.

I'm fairly certain Elaborate works dynamically. That means when you have it up all damage gets increased by 10% for its duration, even DoTs already in place. Because of this it is a loss of damage to do what mister Warlock here says. Garrote into Rupture if you wish to get EP very fast, even though I'd suggest Garrote into Mut into Rupturefor the duration, abs you Garrote WILL benefit from Elaborate Planning. No point in using Garrote twice. Sure, people could say the additional damage tic you get from using Garrote twice will deal higher damage than a mut. Well, it's not true. The raw Garrote tic damage might be higher than Mutilate, you actually proc poisons on Mutilate along with the possibility of getting 4cp, and that is far superior o one Garrote tic. MAYBE of you play 3 times Shrouded Suffocation you could go for that additional tic though, but without that I really do not think it is worth it.
