We see Naga that are “binding” the elements and “forcing them to their will”… Pretty much most Naga are mages, so do mages do that? Or conjure elementals from the arcane? Or summon mindless ones from the elemental planes? We know they don’t ask them, but it feels wrong to say they enslave them… i mean Jaina, Khadgar, Modera, Aegwynn , all those good mages enslaving elements?
Yeah you guessed it, “Summon Water Elemental” is a Conjuration spell, meaning that the water elementals summoned by mages are created, not enslaved. So worry not, our beloved Archmages are in the clear!
Though, what exactly the naga are doing is a bit of a mystery. I can speculate a bit, but I’m not certain in anything that I’m about to say…
As you may know, Shamans are able to use the powers of the elements by forging pacts with them. Dark Shamans, on the other hand, force the elements to submit to their will by using the void, as stated
on the gamepedia page for “Void” which I’m seemingly unable to link for some reason.
" Void is capable of dominating and enslaving elementals. One way for a Shaman to become a Dark Shaman is to use the Void to control the Elements"
And according to Chronicles, the Old Gods enslaved the Elemental Lords once they arrived on Azeroth.
As for the Naga, we do know for a fact that they’re consorting with the Old God N’zoth, so we could come to the conclusion that the Naga are enslaving the elementals using Shadow.
Now you may be wondering why they would not simply just conjure their own; that’s because Conjuring elementals isn’t easy. Those who can do it are usually able to create and control only one at a time. Only more renowned mages, such as Jaina and Niel Aran were seen Conjuring more than one.
As such, that way of going about it probably would have been more inefficient for the Naga when it came to their goal of creating a huge army.
Anyways, sorry for rambling, I hope my answer was helpful.
I don’t know if the lore has changed since Lich King, but at the time, there were ostensibly two separate things:
- “Spirit” elementals, that is, manifestations of the elements. They also exist on Draenor and presumably on every world.
- “Exile” elementals, who were once servants of the Old Gods on Azeroth specifically and were bound to a prison world (the Elemental Plane) by the Titans. The Elemental Lords like Ragnaros and their servants are all of this type.
Shamans are supposed to deal with the former group, mages with the latter - ie, mages do not interact with natural spirits, they briefly pull their minions from the Elemental Plane. The exact similarities or differences between these elementals have never been clarified as far as I know. I’ve never read anything about mages creating elementals.
I’ve always understood “dark shamans” as enslaving spirits, rather than exiles, but this is speculation.
